1st attempt at posting

Hello everyone I hope this works, as I have been a member for a couple of months I thought it about time that I tried to post a picture and become more proactive in the forums. The information and help this site has been to me since beginning is great so now I better get used to others seeing my photos and keep learning from the comments and advice that are so freely given.

Couldn't get EXIF so I'm just wondering whether you could open the aperture more and blur the background more...

As someone else mentioned, maybe blur the background a bit more to help hide the distracting elements, otherwise it's a great shot.

Thanks for the comments, Aperture for blur (it seems I have another facet to learn). When taking this shot, all I could hear was this voice in my head saying get closer (thanks Dug it looks like I am stuck with that voice in my head). It was the 5th tackle and wynnum kicked to the corner, the wynnum player caught the ball and scored under the post. I took a sequence of shots but this shot was the only one that got the players face.

I do like this shot it taught me to be ready and not rush the moment.

The smaller the aperture the longer the shutter needs to stay open to capture the scene (since less light is getting to the sensor). This results in greater depth of field (DOF). The reverse applies if the aperture is really large - very little DOF (ie a blurry background)

So if you want a blurry background you want a big aperture (which also means a fast shutter speed so that sits nicely with action shots). Remember too that the LARGER the F value, the smaller the aperture (since f8 = 1/8 and f20 = 1/20).

Another technique is panning where you move your camera with the action and get a motion blur on the background. This takes some practice (I still can't manage it!)

Edit: It would also be worthwhile looking at some of the excellent tutorials that are referenced in the lower left corner of the forum home page.

Ozi, it's not your club anymore, your fellow members gave it away for free to an actor who likes to get in punch ups and some rich blokes son! They didn't even get one dollar for all that history, just a promise that they will invest $3m, money they would have had to anyway.

Even worse was when one said they thought that the takeover was better than winning a grand final! Give me a break, a free takeover is better than a grand final to a football club?

Glen, you may be right here, I don't know, but I sure would like to see them win even one game this year! As for Rusty and HaC, who knows what's going to happen? I can see why the membership (I'm not a member) voted them in, but everything is becoming very much American like, with clubs being bought/sold eg LA Rams now St Louis Rams etc.

It seems the old days of passion and commintment to one club, your own junior club, are well and truly gone.

I must say I personally don't like the lack of commitment shown now, but the fans garnered today are often fair weather friends. Note how quickly the Swans lost their fan base after Edelstein (they are back now).

I just couldn't believe that Crowe agreed with that woman that he thought his ownership was better than winning a Grand Final. Sounds like personal ego is more important than the fans getting a GF.

And what a cracker of an image it is too! The lads have all offered some advice here and I can't really add to it but I guess you've now got some things think about next time. A lot of this stuff we take for granted and forget that what we consider "The Basics" may not necessarily be that for others.

Yes I know it took me a while to work out how to put an image on the web and then put it into the forum. The best thing I feel about this, is now I feel like I can contribute as well to these forums. I have also joined the BCG, so if there is any advice you can give me in that area, it would be much appreciated.

To Glen and Ozimax, It looks like you both have the same passion for the game as I do. A couple of years ago I started following the local league again and have really enjoyed the experience. There is something about a ground with a hill,chookpen and the kids can play on the oval at half time and full time. Just as i did when I was a kid, try doing that at a broncos home game.
