Murray,
Nice photos, but what WB setting are you using? These have a slight blue cast which is spoiling them. Could you try to rest the wb to something more appropriate ? g.

Great photos both here and on the website, do you have field access?
I think I might have to browse the site and check it out (purely for critique purposesonly) ![]() ![]() What gear were you using? and on the site you got both the front and the rear of the cheer leaders, you must be pretty fast on your feet!!! I think you've got the balance between photographic subjects perfect!
Hooley dooley... I'm not game to type what I'm thinking about #3... I'm thinking with the wrong brain here... While God was kind enough to give men two brains, we've only got enough blood to run one at a time ![]() I think I'll stop here before I get into trouble.... Aka Andrew
Good to see another Manly supporter on the BB

Interesting. I don't see it. Do you see it on all the photos? I used auto WB in the camera but shoot RAW, so that really doesn't matter. When I converted them the colour temperature was around the 5000 mark. I just had a quick play with the first photo in Paint Shop and reduced the blue channel by 100% with no perceptible change in skin tone. The only real change I noticed was in the clothing which became a little whiter. Maybe its time to calibrate my monitor or get an eye check. ![]() Regards,

Love the expression on the girl on the left in the last shot! Looks like the girl up top dropped her guts and the girl on the left is down-wind!!
![]() Gary, can't say I see the WB issue but if it's what I think it is it's what I like to call "Cool Canon"!! The 1Ds' we use at work tend to be on the cool side across the board - Auto WB and the presets! I've noticed Nikon's tend to err on the warm side - one would think this would be the more desirable? Doesn't help that the red channel has a tendancy to blow first on the D70 tho! Sorry to go a little ![]() EDIT: forgot to mention - Great work Murray!
WB looks fine to me...
Womens Bodies...are fine ![]() The color temp looks good as well and I don't see any strong element of blue. Geoff

I'm no expert but I don't think that's a legal scrum in shot #3.

I don't as yet have field access, but am working on it. It would make it a whole lot easier than having to fight for position in the crowd. I used the 30D and 70-200mm f/2.8 IS lens. My 580EX flash was used when I was able to get in close enough to the girls. As for being fast on my feet, I didn't have to move as the cheerleaders were nice enough to turn around for me. Regards,

No problems with Wb on my monitor.
Nice shots, the cheerleader ones are nice, always got time to look at those images, the game shot is good also. Good luck getting field access, I hope you do it. Well done! 2x D700, 2x D2h, lenses, speedlights, studio, pelican cases, tripods, monopods, patridges, pear trees etc etc

Yes I do, but it's subtle, and you need to know what to look for. I always look in shaded white areas first; they're a dead giveaway, once you know how to see this. ![]() Grab the first image: look in the following areas:- The girl's headband, directly above and in line with her left eye. Her left shoulder/upper arm area- the rearmost section (as the arm/shoulder area merges towards her back) To a lesser extent - this is much more subtle - the white in her left eye. Now look at her chest and shoulderblade, on her right hand side. Throw this image into your PP software, and see if you can pull the hairband or shirt - where it's in shadow - back to a purer white. Then see what the chest/shoulder area looks like. Note the changes in the settings that you're making, and see what happens when you apply similar adjustments to the other two images.
One of the issues with auto wb is that it's looking at, and can be influenced by, the subject matter that you're shooting. I think it's better to take control and set a fixed value, thus providing your images with a common foundation.
Given that you have a subject that should be white, this a good starting point. Given a few years' experience, I've learned that the colours evident in shaded white areas will tell you a great deal about the image that you're looking at, and as I noted above, that's what I'm seeing. On my calibrated monitor. Is your's? ![]()
I'd start with the monitor. ![]() g.

I have to disagree to a degree there Gary! Quite often the WB in the shaded areas of an image can be very deceiving. I think what you're pointing out is a reflection of the blue sky, not the colour of light from the sun/strobe in this case. I think you'll find if you try to balance to the blue areas you're pointing out the image will take on a bit of a putrid warm tone.
I'm guessing here so don't persecute me, please (unless it involves these women with whips and chains, that i could handle! ![]()
Thanks for the explanation Gary. Here is the picture with the blue channel removed.
![]() Do you see any improvement? I notice the clothing is whiter but can see little other differences. My monitor has not been calibrated properly, (which is something I'm going to rectify in the near future), so I'll trust your experience on this one. Regards,

I disagree, all the skin tones are techicnally incorrect. remember yellow over red. Natural skintone are more yellow than pink, have a good look at your own skin in natural light.
Gary has a point which inevitably leads to colour correction which I have stated before on this forum. Most digital images have a colour cast unless shot in perfect studio conditions and with perfect lighting conditions. this is a matter a fact and most people don't realise correct colour tempretaure in skin tones. Don't get me wrong these images are of great quality and composure, maybe Im fanatical about skintones being the correct colour balance. Jethro shoot it real.
look! and see. Shoot and feel
Thanks for that Jethro. Any tips on achieving correct skin tone? Was it as simple as just increasing the yellow. I've still got plenty of things to learn. By the way your not being anal at all, just somebody who likes things to be correct. Regards,

I'll have to spend some time one day and explain myself with colour correction. i used to operate a dainippon stand alone drum scanner some time ago and old habbits die hard. The add industry is extremely anal as to correct skin colour and what was called a characteristic curve when it came to colour balance and grey balance and also levels of grey.
Age and digital technology has shoved a lot of this relevant info to the rear of my grey matter. today PS has taken over but the same relevant principles do apply ill have to refresh my notes as they say jethro shoot it real.
look! and see. Shoot and feel
I'm very keen to read your brains Jethro! I tend to spend more time behind the lens these days and that skintone thing slipped right by me! Our studio manager is also our head retoucher and she tends to pick these things up better than I do.
Always willing to learn! I'll quietly remove my toes from my mouth (pretty sure i didn't insert my whole foot!)
your point is ????? cheers rob
Great shots Muz,
Oooooo how I like that last one, what I would give, ooohh what I would give. Great Bokeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa !!!!!!! Mic. ![]()
i'm with you mic..... there's something about that last pic ... makes me look to the sky in thought ... cheers rob
Murrray, Jethro, much better.
Murray, if you could now take the changes that Jethro implemented, and apply them to the other two images, I think you'll find that they too will show a significant improvement. Liam, WB/colour cast ... doesn't really matter. ![]() Using my typical Lazy Man's Approach (Pat Pending ![]() g.
