some more backstage portraits with my trusty sb800 which has really proven time and time again that it can produce gorgeous light similar to that of a studio strobe.

mostly shot 1/250 f4.5 ISO800 with the 28-70 f2.8

photoshopped, desaturated the skintones a little and tweaked the colour to bronzify them

That's some great finish, i love personally the first and last shot, she's a great model and it's wicked crisp focus

Can I ask what setting you have the flash on? Fully auto or manual? Strobe or standard flash etc? I am just learning to use the 580EX and would appreciate any advice you'd have on the flash side of things.

as explained many times before in my past posts

1 meter away from position of flash can be determined from the flash reflection on the eyes or the direction of the shadow under the nose, learn how to study lighting results on fashion shots and your half way there. Flash is on ttl so whatever manual exp/Apt settings i use on the camera the flash output is somewhat balanced for the exposure(but i hardly trust on camera metering), sometimes its over or under exposed so i take the first ref shot at my usual 1/250 f4.5(kills the background) evaluate image if it's too bright i hold the flash further away, to dark I bring flash closer
nothing too technical i shoot by feel, the best way to get it is experiment i usually take 3 shots to get the results i want, thats all i'm willing to admit now - and that's a lot of giving after the hard work iof working out my technique myself the rest is up to you to nut crack a little and experiment hard work and persistence = great results

the 28-70 at f4.5 is a sharp lens but it should be noted proper exposure achieved by the flash helps alot

Wendell your skill level is moving ahead in leaps and bounds. Fantastic work with superb art direction (i guess your own?) and colours glorious. I suppose to be picky, cause everything else is just so superb, I'd say a reangling of the key light to avoid the rather harsh, unflattering nose tip and shadow on the male model. Can't say it enough simply the best.

ISO 800 captures as much of the little ambient light in the background
example 2 male model you can just see some of the background

example 1 forced to shoot 1/250 because model is waving her head around
fast motion, I wanted to capture it perfectly still inadvertant effect drowns out all ambient light in the background,

it's bakcstage work i work alone, in the studio however i may have a brief from an art director and may have to work with a stylist, but i havn't worked with either who disagree with my art direction, so i'm lucky

love all of them. If I had to pick one, I'd go with #3. It has a French look to it, which I like.
