Bike pics, at the track

Postby BBJ on Sat Nov 18, 2006 9:44 pm

Hi All, well i am having a camera free weekend and have been out playing in my new boat trying to catch some fish since the weather is nice as i have 4 days of National Historic Motorbike Racing next week so will be a busy week for me with over 300 bikes attending. So was sitting here listening to music and thought i would share a few pics from my last track day.
Enjoy. All taken with the Nikon 300 F2.8 and D2x.
1 of my Favorite bikes is the Ducati.

BBJ - All great shots and clear as crystal. You have that combination singing for you.

I have a question for you though: Do you ever find that the 300 prime in these circumstances causes problems composing the images becuse you get too close to the action, thus leading to close cropping, truncation and decapitation in some of your shots? I ask because I have found in similar circumstance myself shooting fast moving subjects with a prime lens, that sometime i get too close to the action and i missed out on photographing the whole subject? Is it just a matter at the races of choosing your spot on the course and sticking to an area that you know where the composition is good?

Cheers

Steve, yes pending on what i am shooting but when i am at the bikes i seem to have the good spots worked out and dont have a problem when using the prime lens. It is shooting cars i have a problem with and have had them rolling toward me and not being able to zoom to keep in frame.

I have my spots marked out where i can shoot from for what type of shot i want. The last shot i dont have a problem with as it is a rise on a bit of a straight so when they come around the corner and power on over the start/finish line is a good spot for wheelies. I sometimes wish that i should have gone for the Sigma 120-300 before my prime lens came up, but i just use it in different places and there are time i dont even put on the camera.
Cheers

Great sharp images John. I particularly like peak of the action caught in #1. Terrific. ISpeaking of the 120-300 Sigma just got mine on Thursday afternoon. Beautiful piece of glass. and I agree, even not being experienced with motor racing, that it would be perfect in terms of being able to compose on the fly. Sharpness contrast is fanatastic on this lens.

Great bike shots, but the boat shot is the one that does it for me. And did you catch anything?

Brett, today we got bugger all couple of bream and salmon, but undersize. Is ok kids enjoyed it and was cooler down the river today than here as was 30 here, but nice down there. Luckily we are only 20 mins from the river and sea so just a matter of choosing where to fish.

Nice Tinny and as usual great shots. My vote is for #3.
At this stage I have the weekend off so I'll try and come out with the camera and say hi.

Cheers

Great tinny John!
I dream about having something like this.
Currently I have a 10ft VERY old tinny with a little 7.5hp on the back. Haven't been out in it for over a year but it's in the garage needing some TLC and registering. Hopefully this summer :)

30 C at the Mount? You must be kidding here John, it never gets to 30 in MTG. We'v had just about coolest Spring on record here in Coffs, with heaps of rain. :)

Love the 3rd shot too, (mono). Trouble is John your shots are always of the highest standard, it's hard to know what to say about each shot. I think I will say nothing more, just sit back and enjoy the bikes in action. I still keep looking at the CB900 Hornet at my local Honda dealer - at $11,990 on road it's a steal for a naked bike, just can't convince the missus it's a good deal! Ah well, that's life eh? :D

Max, Thanks for coments mate and yeh i guess there is only so much you can do with the pics but yeh it paid for my boat so that is good. Anyhow i like the look of those hornets well almost all naked bikes, but there is a new Kwacka 1200 mate looks like a nice bike as i have had a good look at it, and i too would love it as my mate has a Kwacka dealership here and around same price.

Mate this bike has got some grunt and i love it, and well i have always like Kwackas and Honda's and used to work for a Kwacka shop many years ok when the GPZ's were around. But for the money mate this is what i would be getting instead of the Honda.

John that is some bike, and it keeps the kwaka green as well, would definitely outmuscle the Honda; is $11990 on road or base price only?

You would remember the good old days of the GPZ1100 B2 model. My brother owned one and I used to ride it - it was a beast for sure until he was broadsided by a myopic geriatric wearing cokebottle glasses - thankfully he lived to remember the accident!

Cheers mate.

Max, i think onroad cost might be extra but still a good price at that anyhow and yes i remember the older gpz's. I used to have to unpack and service them and take them for there first ride when we had some come into the shop, great bikes though.

Before I bought my camera and got involved with this forum, fishing was everything to me, but now I turned down a chance to go chasing jew tonight. And when I go fishing I dont seem to care whether I catch fish or not. I think I have to change my attitude again.

I am looking forward to your fish and river photos, especially if you treat those shots with the same expertise tha you apply to your bike shots
