Andrew i think the light back right is a little bright, first image....apart from that they re pretty good shots

i think these are both very nice portraits!

the first, as noted, perhaps burn the upper right hand side a little, or soften the vertical line above the head, but these are small negatives on a nice image.

second, perhaps burn the rear light a little, but the expression is great!

Andrew,

Both are nice shots, but the first one has something about it that I find makes me distract from the actual portrait. I seem to be looking at the left hand side of the image at the "empty" space..I`m wondering if the image has been cropped? If so, I perhaps would have taken out the left side and had your son more central (if that makes sense) Nice and sharp though.
