Coffs Air Show

Spent an enjoyable few hours at the annual air show today. Here's a few images. While I really think that the 30D is a great all round camera, I think a MkII would do a far better job at autofocus. This is the one area in which the 30D struggles. High speed subjects are hard to track, even with a lightning fast 70-200 pro lens. Anyway, here goes:

Wow, an FW-90. I didn't even know there were any in Australia. :)

Subjects like that are always very 'flighty' and hard to shoot. :)

Nice shooting. I wish I had been there.

Steve, I assume the FW-90 is the one with the German insignia? (You can see I'm an aviation nut... )

Congratulations! You shot your first german! :D :D :D

Nice pics. Airshows are great for photography and you nailed some difficult subjects.

Oooooooh a Focke Wulf!

Is the F-190 real or a knock off? Any other images of this cracker?

Lovely images!

I have heaps of other images but I havn't had time to go through them. For some reason with this plane the exposure and focus was spot on, sometimes you get lucky! As to whether it is for real, I have no idea. I can tell a 747 from a Cessna but that's about it. :D

I love the photos, wish I could have been there and been shooting as well. But then again it would have been wasted, I'd have gotten very frustrated with my Tamron 70-300mm screw driver or the Sigma HSM 180mm macro.

You have done a sterling job.

I was like WTF a FW-190 when I saw that first pic as well.

Can anyone please explain to me the significance of the FW 190 or 90 or whatever it is, please? :)

Have found a copy of the programme from Saturday. and it seems that this FW-190 is an 80% example, whatever that means. I assume it is 80% of a genuine plane. FYI.

And the other 20% would be a broken down Atlantean bus? :)

I was browsing a few more images from last Saturday and came across these. The planes weren't as close as some others, but the action was incredible. These pilots are definitely nuts, with a capital "N".

Excellent images, ozimax. Which lens did you end up using? Did you use a monopod? I take you took them with your 30D.

No monopod, just the 30D with Canon 70-200 F2.8 non IS. I did have my tripod handy to give me a rest now and then. Ozi.

Thank you, Ozi. I was going to go this morning to Amberly to see an airshow and I thought to ask the expert, but it couldn't be. It will be another time.
