I miss my d200, it's so much more comfortable to hold for long periods than the 30d

2 12 hour days @ bathurst last weekend left me with a very sore wrist!

I'll be snapping up a low mileage 1d2n next month.. :)

Might I suggest a used 1Ds as a second body as well.

And I guess you're unhappy with the ISO thing from your D200 I guess?

One word NOISE!

This cam just does NOT handle low light well at all.......and MOST of my photography is going down the lowlight path.

Wow. I heavily disagree. I've seen the D200 as a vast improvement over noise. In fact, even the D70 wasn't horrific with noise.

The noise on cameras tends to look bad if the exposure isn't good, and usually poor exposure is what people mistake for "bad noise".

Yeah, but there's "pretty good noise (for a Nikon)" and then there's "pretty good noise". Interestingly, some of the graphs I've seen suggest that the D200 is less than a stop worse than the 30D at the extreme - it's only from ~1000ISO to ~1600ISO where the Canon is significantly better. Now to try and find the site...

I don't know much about Canons, but assume this is there top of the line? What sort of street price are people expecting?

cameras will be delivered to a printer cartridges within 1 to 10 days. First batch sold with $1000 deposits.

2nd batch has a few spots left, due 2 to 3 weeks.

Ive called them (printer cartridges) to TRY and get a spot in the first batch if someone falls out, need camera by LATEST next Thur as I leave for EU in 14 days :(

About $7k. www.qualitycamera.com.au has it listed at $6500 for delivery in a month or two.

It's kinda their top of the line - they have been splitting their DSLRs into two lines, the 1D cameras are more fps but less pixels, and the 1Ds ones more pixels but fewer fps, and normally both do the same pixels per second. We are all expecting a 1DsIII soon, very similar but 22MP at 4 or 5 fps.

Is there any real benefit in 22 MP? A lot of what i have read lately has suggested that anything beyond 10-12 MP is unnecessary. Of course, there was a time when 1.44mb floppy discs were considered excessive too.

They must have a pretty impressive buffer to be able to write that much data in such a short period of time.

Also, at 10fps the gap between this and a video camera are relatively minimal (at least in this respect).

A 1ds MK III with 22mp is purely speculation.

Hi Everyone,
Whilst a 22mp 1Ds Mk III is speculation - look at the history. The data-bus in the 1D Mk II was 8mp / 8fps = 64mp/s. The 1Ds Mk II is 16mp@4fps = 64mp/s. The 1Ds Mk III may well be 20mps at 5fps, 22mp@4.5fps, or even 25mp@4fps. The bus is there to support it. We'll just need to wait till August/September.

Regarding the 1D Mk III the people at Canon are pretty much saying mid-late May. Again as with the 1D Mk II, the news houses have bulk orders and get priority fill, then it trickles down to the pre-orders.

The 580EX II is sounding like it may land sooner than the 1D III but I'm not holding my breath.

Anyway to tide you over - here's some British 1D Mark III candy for you

To be honest I love the Nikon ergonomics - almost convinced myself to jump ship and get a coupla D2xs' and hell with the "cost of conversin" = as they are really that comfortable to shoot with (IMHO) - the flash system is also awesome... However its the images you need, and the images you get. Unfortunately Canon are just magic at this right now (and have been for quite some time now) which means that Nikon are still tinkering with the rumored D3x 1.1 crop factor whilst photographers wait.

IMHO Nikon's are great cameras - with "damaged film..." Sad.... I hope to see them improve... imagine if they do - what Canon could produce when they have Nikon actually competing?!

Cheers, Nathan.

Hi Kris,
You're expecting delivery of the 1D III before next Thursday? Or do you have a backup plan for your trip?

The camera will be available in Adelaide early may, Teds have 3 which are not on a waiting list that they are making available but you have to go through their "pro devision"..

Not sure that Teds is the definitive source on availability - eg. Teds Sydney advised they have 12 on order, 7 pre-ordered, however expecting only 3 in the first wave. I'm still hearing mid->late May... but hoping they are wrong!!

No backup plan, looks like Im going to have to go with a 5D.

Teds Pro Division, when are they available there?

Seems finding one before next week will be impossible - apparently its the AF issue thats causing the delay

I too dont believe Teds will be first..

"Ted's Pro Division" - hmmm apart from the embargo disallowing stores like JB HiFi from stocking the 1D series (they have a hard enough time getting 5D's) due to Ted's, G&V & some Camera House's etc being classed as "Pro Resellers" - Ted's Pro Division, in the City store at least - is pretty much the back left corner of the store....

The reps are all the same - some have slightly more knowledge and enthusiasm, and some will actually give you brochures on the products... you seen the 30/40 page booklet on the 1D Mark III full of mainly sports photography? In short - I'm hoping they get it soon - but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Where have I heard? Experience tells most - not all - but most... They weren't first to market with the 1D Mk II or the 1Ds Mk II, N not sure about - and they got the 5D at about the same time as everyone else. D2xs they also got late.

FYI Kris - if you need a new 5D - like immediately JB City Store is getting three in anyday now. PM/Email me for details if interested. Price is very competitive for AusDM pricing.

Cheers, Nathan.

Got to play with a production version of the 1D Mark III last week - and I have to say.... I'm now looking at how to get my hands on one. Whilst I was keen before - I always HAD to play with it before I bought it - yes I know I could have had one by now if I hadn't needed to try it out....

So to get it out of the way - the 10fps.... Impressive to say the least... Mind blowing when you think about how may HDD's these cameras are going to be responsible for filling up! However the most impressive aspect is - for want of a better term... How "alive" it feels in the hand... The weight distribution is excellent - and its notably lighter than its predecessors.... It also feels more... heavy duty. Lighter and more heavy duty? Perhaps I mean sturdier. The new finish and firmness of the 1D Mk III makes it feel like a tool crafted for use.

Anyway - I played with the live-shooting thing - it's pretty good, but I felt like I was playing with a $300 P&S camera. LOL

Will I get one? Sure will - release date news? None as yet - the first allocations was purely for demo fill with no solid dates on the next wave. Could be tomorrow - could be three weeks...
