nikon lens mount electronics

Postby davidkelly on Thu Oct 05, 2006 1:18 pm

does anyone know what the format of the signals on the Nikon lens mount is? I would like to make a chip to put in my old lenses to make matrix metering work with them.
I could send them overseas for modification, but it's not worth the cost.
How did Sigma and Tamron find out this?
Did they reverse-engineer the Nikon lenses, or did Nikon tell them?
Thanks,
Dave Kelly. PS: I'm happy to share any info I find.

As far as I know, the easiest way is the get the electronics out of a CPU lens. Not sure of the finer details though.

Maybe find a damaged lens and pull it to bits.

I reckon hacking up some sort of circuit to produce the right signals would be the easy bit - but making a reliable contact assembly to mount with the body would be pretty tricky! And if you want "D" functionality, sensing the focus distance as well. As far as I know, the lens mods available only include the metering function, not distance info.

Edit: Some pics & info here - http://www.naturfotograf.com/CPU_extension.html#top_page

Cheers
