Here is another one from this afternoon.

It took ages for me to get a decent shot of this one... He was staying in amongst the reeds most of the time. Fascinating to watch though!! It would do a little dance chasing a fish then fly off to the side of the pond to eat it... Then slowly wade back out to look for more.

Focus isn't perfect on this one as the camera was strugging to get around all the reeds. Also the neck/head is a little overexposed. Still learning about when to use exposure comp and how much to use.

Comments welcome

ISO500, F7.1, 1/100, SB800 TTL -1.0 flash comp.

You critiqued your own image well. I agree with all you said. I dont think head on is the best profile for this species? Still it is quite a pleasant shot and the reeds add perspective.

Reservations notwithstanding, I still like the shot of this giraffesque bird.

Maybe a crop 40% from the top would bring the subject into more prominence.

Thanks for the comments...

I thought about a crop from the top of the image but thought it looked better keeping the in-focus reed intact. That doesn't leave me much room to move.
