Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

As usual the D70 could not focus when there is a lot of sky or ocean and I had to use manual focus.

There you go. He like me just liked the image.

What focus point /mode are you using for these photos that you're having trouble focussing on?

And with any particular lens?

I am using AF-S, and the 12-24 Sigma. Here is an example of shot that is unreliable in auto focus:

Any advice appreciated. The thing is, these photo opportunities are expensive
and the good thing in this mode is that is thaht it does not fire so I am in no doubt. In manual I sometimes get the foreground out of focus... Or in this case the background (f/8 - 1/800)

The D2 series will help you out with these situations.
You'll gain more keepers with these expensive photo opportunities.

Good to hear. I am still thinking of getting a Sigma 10-20 for these shots, but I am not sure how long my son will stay current in this airplane as he has tasted something much more powerful. I will have to see how it is in the other one as it has a canopy.

The Sigma 10-20 won't do much better in this case, the 10.5 FE is the one you should aim for, plus the D2x then will be a nice combo/ forget about the D200.

Gerard - with the Sigma 12-24mm set at 12mm on a Nikon D70/s aperture at f/8 and manually focussed to 2 metres will give you everything in focus from 0.62m thro infinity 8)

Chris,
That is why I shoot up to f/9 or 10, but in some shots I cannot get the camera more than a foot away! I still would rather have the auto focus to work. On the other hand I do not know how holding a D2X in 250k/h wind would feel. Only holding the D70 makes the airplane slow down and climb!...
