Both shots are excellent, but the birds is a standout shot especially having just the one head in focus :)

The bird pic is ace even though they're pics of flying squealers. Reminds me of a Gary Larson comic with the penguins, with one standing up and singing "I just gotta be me"... Ok so I'm weird ;)

Agree completely, if you don't take another shot with that lens, it was worth the money.

Thanks folks.

I was kinda happy with the bird even though they are just gulls

Heres the official description off teh ebay site "Opteka 500mm f/8 Telephoto Mirror Lens, High Definition, Ultra Compact, Built-In Macro WITH ND-2X Filter, ND-4X Filter and Skylight Filter "

Not so sure about the macro. I took a couple of quick shots (hand held) close ups of some shells, not worth posting but reasonbly close, more closeup than macro. I was about 5 feet away and a couple of small shells filled the frame so it might be good for easily spooked insects and the like. :D

Great shot of the flying rat 8)

Canon 20D and a bunch of lovely L glass and a 580EX. Benro tripod. Manfrotto monopod. Lowepro and Crumpler bags. And a pair of Sigma teleconverters, and some Kenko tubes.

Wow, these shots irrefutably prove that mirror lenses are capable of great images if you avoid highlights in the background. I'm very impressed.

The first one reminds me of that boat in "Perfect Storm". To my eye it shows no signs of objectionable bokeh.

Cheers
Steffen.

Two great images you've taken there Slider. Very nice indeed. One thing that i have noticed that is a bit odd with mirror lenses, mine included is the narrow DOF at F8. The seagulls being a great example of that.

If that is your first attempt with it, i can't wait to see more as you get used to it.

Great shots, and I'd been watching that lens on Ebay with interest, but your Seagull shot confirmed its quality enough to produce some nice shots!

Mark great shots but that second one, Alfred Hitchcock's - The Birds, is a real blinder. Terrific use of selective focus and DOF.
cheers
