Shedding My Skin (Part 2)

In case you're interested as to why my head isn't shaved, the hairdresser and I had a misunderstanding-ish issue.

Somewhere between her not understanding the length of the shave I wanted and her telling me that it wouldn't suit me, I settled for it to be what's probably the shortest I've ever had my hair.

It works, though.

Leigh as you could guess I run a no1 blade over my head all of the time. Best haircut I ever had. Don't listen to anyone else.

These pics are excellent. Did you take them? The weakest is #3 - I don't like the fact you are right at the bottom of the frame.

Actually these pics are better than excellent - #1 and #2 are brilliant. Lovely gritty doco feel to them. BTW The hairdresser may be right. You have to have the right shape head to look good shaved (Matt B - Rokkstar is a good example) and your's may be the wrong shape. OTOH there is nothing worse than thinning LONG hair. So you've probably hit on the right look for you PLUS it feels really great when you run your hands over it doesn't it

I went to the barber about a year ago and asked them to shave it all off - I got a similar result to you... their justification was they didn't want to cut it too short in case I hated it and then didn't return to their shop!

So I just went out and bought my own clippers, whacked on a number 3 and haven't looked back! Great photos too, you've achieved a unique grainy look.

I like # 1 and 2 as well. Lovely dark feel to them. #3, like Peter says, is distracting with your head at the bottom of the frame.

I say fuck it Leigh, go for the razor mate, it'll grow back if you don't like it to the length it is now.

Peter: Yep, I shot them myself.
I stuck the tripod on my bed and used the remote for all its worth.
And after firing 87 shots off, I came up with four photos.

This is the fourth one, but I thought it looked a tad too silly, even for me:



Oneputt: I honestly wouldn't trust myself with a blade.
Between not being able to cut a straight line in my four years of Fine Art degree-ness and always managing to hate myself severely after attempting to cut paper in the blacked-out colour darkroom with a boxcutter razor, I just think I'll let others handle the razor bit for me.

Leigh the extra shot is great too, not at all silly. When John talks about a #1 blade I think he means clippers with a #1 comb on them (very short). I have some hair clippers you can have if I can find where I stashed them. They came free with my beard clippers and I've never used them (the hair clippers).

But seriously, there are many men who would benefit from having a #2 or #3 haircut. There is nothing worse, IMO, in trying to hide faults by combing hair over an obvious bald patch - plus it is so much easier to handle - short hair

I've had a very wide part since I was 22 so I know where you're coming from about what to do with less & less hair. Find a hairdresser who'll do what you want & go for it... after all there's only 2 weeks between a bad haircut and a good one!

Wow, really like the gritty lighting and shadows in #2, and now that I've seen the original color version, I'm more impressed by the PP and the vision...

I find order in chaos.

I still post process it to be black and white, and most of the studio portraits I've done were with black backgrounds.

Not bad Leigh, but i cant help myself in saying you really remind me of some UNI dropout we see protesting on the tv all the time, let alone let you loose with a blade, who knows what goes on in that imaginative brain of yours. Hey and is that a Gismo i can see in the background or 1 of them Furby things??

You have truly transformed the shot. It would be a great before and after workshop image.

Well, alright, even after seeing the real scene in colour, I'd have to pick #3. If only for the background silhouette and the story it tells. A story of desolation and despair (almost as if you regret shedding your skin )

The thing I wonder about is, did you anticipate the backround effect when you took the shots in that (not at all messy from what I've witnessed) room, or did it pop up during PP? If the former, I have to concede I'm blind, if the latter I have to take a lot more photographs and play with them...
