Calm before LarryWife and I went to Palm Cove the evening of Larry's unwelcomed arrival. Took a few snaps on dusk with my 35-70 F/2.8 (Take a look MAtt- I hope you decided to pick up that good deal on that 35-70 f/2.8 a while ago- it is a lovely lens). Be interested to know what others think in terms of composition of the 2 sets. All comments and critiques welcome.

Number 3 does it for me.
I like the way my eye is lead into the image by the pier. And when my eye gets to the end there is that patch of light on the water. Gorgeous. Not sure if it would look better without the massive flare/blooming(?) around the lights. Paul http://www.australiandigitalphotography.com
Living in poverty due to my addiction to NIKON... Is there a clinic that can help me?
After my recent fetish, it's good to see someone else posting shots of piers
![]() #1, The sharpness of the pier itself makes it stand out soo much... Like the rock in the BL cnr with some nice wispy blurred water around it, think it just needs to be a smidge higher and to the right in the frame... Just me though... The spotlight in the water immediately takes my eye straight to it... Pick of 'em for me mainly due to the rock ![]() #2, I like the blurred water's edge, but the pier now looks very muddy and lacking detail... ? F20 might be pushing the aperture of the lens too hard resulting in softness maybe? #3, I'd crop out the dark edge along the bottom. Love the effect of the lighting and the starred lights, assume a very small aperture but couldn't get EXIF on this one... This one's quite catching... #4 has too much bunched up on the RHS for me, there seems to be too much dead space on the left for me... Needs something in the BL third, where's that rock! The color or sat in these seems strange to me... Aka Andrew
No.3 is very nice in terms of composition. But they all seem to be just a tad too blue for my liking.
Alex
I love the blueness, number 3 does it for me.
That sucker would be on my wall for sure. Simon
www.colberne.com.au I purchased a Teddy Bear this morning for the sum of $10. I named him Mohammed. This afternoon I sold him on E-Bay for $30. My question is, "Have I made a prophet?"
Thanks for the feedback guys.
Matt I know you are going to love this lens. Has some flare problems shooting into light as you can see in some of the above images but overall it has great contrast and colour. Thanks Paul and Craig. #3 was probably my fav along with #1 Alex I actually ran a Midnight Blue wash from Nik filters. I sort of liked the effect but perhaps too much ![]() Thanks Mudder for the detailed comments I really find the comments helpful. As i stated for Alex comment above I ran a Midnight blue filter from Niks that also creates a blurred effect which I like. I probably overdi it in #2 As for #4 I agree with you I wanted to include an outcrop of rock on the left horizon called Scouts Hat (Part of Double Island just off the coast about 1km) but I just couldn't get it in and achieve the same perspective with the lens I had. I thought of moving in closer etc but with my wife beeping the horn in the car. It was prudently my last shot for the evening ![]() cheers marco
Really nice results there Marco. I can feel some lens lust beginning again
![]() Number 3 is a beauty but I keep coming back to number 1. Don't know what it is, I think it may be the swirling effect of the sea , but I love it. ![]() Cheers

I'm a sucker for blue and these images really appeal to me. #3 is the best, but they're all great. And you've used my favourite filter system too! Peter

Thanks Slider and Stubbsy. Yeah I really like the 35-70 f/2.8. It is an underrated lens
![]() ![]() I'm thinking of you guys here in the dark only lit by the light of my screen. Generator can't handle too much more running my Engel, house fridge freezer, computer and large fluro. At least we're partly civilised the rest of neighbourhood, and I believe most of Cairns, are in darkness except for thse with noisy of generators up and down the street. Bunnings ran out of generators today. Funny about that ![]() ![]() ![]() cheers marco
Marco I feel for you. It can't be much fun up there from what I'm seeing on the TV. And it's even worse for those further south (eg Mission Beach and Innisfail). I hope you stay in good spirits since I suspect it will be a fair while before you're back to normal.
Peter

#2's my fave. The layers of sky, pier, ocean, wash and sand are fantastic and crisp in the right places.
Nice one! I daren't think about the during or after shot. -- Rog

the composition of the 3rd is best but the stillness of the water looks better in the fourth
although the 3rd has the waves at the bottom which frame the picture nicely surreal scenes are sweet
Marco no 3 for me is the best composition and No 4 the best exposed.

Marco #3 for sure and it is almost certainly saleable as the calm before the storm.
Trusting the lights are on soon Steve
------------------------------------------------------- So many things to do - so little time.
Good to hee you are alright Marco, I ahve inlaws visiting Cairns. They are staying somwhere that has a generator.. So not to disruptive for them.
nice pics also, No.4 for me great work. Any after pics?? MATT
Thanks for the comments on the images Steve and Matt. Actually MAtt I was too busy organising and cleaning up Matt but I did take some snaps for school records today.
![]() The blue metal path under the crossed fallen trees is about 3/4 of a metre wide. To give you an idea of the size of the trees that came down. The year 5 and 6 block is but a few metres behind me. Lucky they fell the other way ![]() I helped my year 7 teacher with this newly built green house. 2 pine trees fell around it just missing it. How lucky was that. ![]() cheers marco
Marco, those are some amazing shots of the damage, can't image how powerful the wind must feel like at 280-300km/hr.
All of them are lovely images Marco - well composed and executed. It's interesting to see all of them have recorded a favourite image response so far. FWIW #1 takes the cake for me.
It's amazing to think you can be posting on this forum so soon after such devastation. I hope things get back to some sort of normalcy for you soon. Andrew
