painted ship upon a painted ocean...

not sure about this one either.

I was watching the colour develop on sydney harbour thinking that it was fabulous, but what to do with it because the city itself was way too hazy.
I wanted to silhouette something but this was all that was available.

love the colour of the water but not sure about the overall shot.

opinions appreciated.

I like the shot. What does it look like if you remove the other 2 smaller boats?

dug: that is something I thought about but didnt do.

I sorta felt that maybe the frame would look a tad empty.
you dont think it would be a tad empty??
would certainly break conventional composition rules too.
although sometimes that isnt necessaryily a bad thing.


might have a look for kicks tomorrow though.

The colour of the sea is interesting, adds a "texture" effect to the image.

The boat in the top right is a little distracting, I like the sailboat in the lower left... I'm wondering if a tighter crop taking out the upper small craft might improve the balance ?

I agree that the top boat is distracting.
I did consider a pano crop of this removing the top boat.

i like it steve, a sea of gold i dont think the small boats detract from the shot at all, well done.

What an excellent image. Can't believe I missed it the first time. Well done. What did you expose for?? I think the small boats add to the image.

I had time to think about and execute 2 shots whilst the ferry was in the right place.
This exif for this is:
80-400mm @ 400mm
600mm (in 35mm film)
1/3200 sec, f/8
Mode: Av
Metering: Center-weighted average
ISO: 200
AF mode: AF-S
White balance: SUNNY
Flash: OFF
Saturation: Normal
Sharpness: NONE
Contrast: Normal

after I shot this, I turned to multi segment metering and took a shot,
this time it wanted 1/1500 of a sec.

the shot you see here, was centre weighted and I metered off the water.
the multi segment shot taken a few seconds later looked nothing like this because it didnt know I was looking for the silhouette and tried to even out the whole scene.

I was happy with the colour of the water because I had seen photos with similar colour but had not actually seen it in real life before.
