Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.
Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.
Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

G'day all,
Saw the light on, thought I'd pop in before going out
Was playing with this shot last night and wasn't sure if it works or it's one for the trashcan... I was trying to emphasise the light on the face of the old church, sort of under god's light sort of thing...
Only spent about 5 mins on it, should have played more but was buggered after ridiculous IT nerd hours, so just wanted to run this past you to see if you think I'm on the right track, or suggestions etc...
PP was some burning, a little bit of LAB color curves, adding some grain/noise and some vignetting...
Suggestions?
EXIF: D70, 50F1.8, F8, exp 1/1000th, single man exp. image
Same thing with just the lightness channell...

I don't know what it is, but I'm struggling to be drawn into the picture.
If this one was mine, I'd be thinking "If in doubt, get closer". This makes me think there could be too much "other stuff" that doesn't draw your attention to the subject.

By all means, please have a play, I enjoy seeing how other people view the same scene differently, I learn heaps from that... Thanks for going to the trouble of playing
I like what you've done, I always whimp out on the cropping, I get the feeling there's a soft focus or similar effect? Like the crop...

I think a combination of what embi has done, coupled with your originally posted colour would be good for me.
The vignetting concentrates my eyes on the church, but the loss of detail isnt as pleasing as your original.
perhaps blurring the stuff around the church would be ok also.
ie gaussian blur instead of vignetting.
think cropping the tree on the RHS is the right thing to do also.

Hi Muddler,
Re-shoot in RAW with all the same settings and with some over cast sky, and trust the camera's image, so you will not need to PP.

I really hope that you're not trying to bring up your mission -- which one admin has already told you to not touch here -- and expect that people use it.
Trust me on this that as an admin I have no problem with enforcing something like this.

I am not promoting a mission here, but want to point out that the sun shining on the white building is too much for the range of the sensor.
So re-shoot without the sun and it will be better.

Both excellent! A classic church image. Pity you couldn't get a mysterious figure draped in black walking through the grass.

Thanks for the tips, I think the additional crop and maybe some softening around the edges will save it from the trashcan... I'll play later...
Thanks for the feedback EP, was taken in raw, I took a few minutes setting up so nary a highlight blown, was careful there. Also all camera adjustment settings turned off where possible and in manual control. I enjoy PP and find I usually apply less aggressive and less manipulative adjustments selectively myself rather than have the camera modify the entire image with all the various camera settings...
Matt, that's a great idea... Hmmm, wonder long the timer can be
Cheers.
