Who is looking at who?

Last September I went up to Hervey Bay for the Whale Watching.
Well worth the trip - the captain of the boat said the bay was 'whale soup' and it was the best day he had seen that year.
Each year gets better as the whale numbers are on the increase.

I was surprised how close they come to the boats. Restrictions are placed on boats approching whales, but the whales haven't read the regulations and, out of curiosity, they come quite close to the boat.

It surprised me that I was reaching for the wide angle zooms more than the telephoto end. Although this shot (with my old D70) was high ISO and telephoto. Please excuse the noise.

I think whales are smarter than we think. I am sure they are not just looking at people in boats, but are plotting to overthrow us. I don't blame them either, after what we, as humans, have done to them over the years.

I used to live in Hervey Bay (on land, not in it :) ) and used to go out on the bay quite often so over the years it was nice to see more and more whales appearing. It was even possible to recognise individuals year after year. I havent been back to HB for about 12 years now so i don't know how the whale population is going there, but i did see about one hundred off Carnarvon in WA last year, lot's more than i've ever seen before, so their numbers are alarmingly on the rise, which is a good thing.

I hope you enjoyed watching the whales. They are very exciting to see really close up. So big and yet so gentle. Amazing creatures. :)
