ES APRIL -- "Self Portrait"

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Forum rules
Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Bernie - thank you :) I'm humbled by your setup .. you can tell the pros !! And I love the shot - very academic - I feel it should be hanging in the halls of some hallowed institution with all of the other heads of department. Love it.

Matt - what a great shot - very painterly as has been pointed out - beautifully done !!!!

Thanks guys for the comments - I don't know about anyone else, but it is bloody hard to take a shot of yourself, and even harder to post it. (Well, not if you are Leigh, but what can you do ;) )

More anyone?

My contribution:

Image

I had a couple of dozen efforts using the shadow, before I realised that just having it trail into the background wasn't so exciting. It took another couple of dozen attemps to get a reasonable jump plus a reasonable facial expression before the sun set. Then a bit of cropping and desaturating.

Taken on a Russian zenitar 'fisheye' (not-so-fisheye on the istDS).

Do you have a spirit level next to your monitor. It seems you can pick a line out of perfect horizontal by .0001 degree!

I haven't kept up with this thread recently and it's been very enjoyable to look through all the new posts. Well done everyone.

Pharmer - Great SP. The colours are indeed "urban" and work so well.

Matt K - Have you applied a texture to your image? If so, which one? Lovely lighting.

Rel - Very Nice. I would consider a closer crop.

Pharmer - EXCELLENT SP mate!! Love the vibrance of the colours and the strong urban feel to it. Well done. If was to be hypercritical of it, I'd prefer to see your right arm not so prominant but that's just being a bit too fussy. Good work, you have inspired me to have a crack at this in the next few days. :D

BT*ist - great pic, concept & execution

Pharmer - like the feel of yours, but a touch too yellow methinks (good location too)

Very dynamic and creative image. It's a job at 'Rolling Stones' for you! Well done.

Macka. Yes....a canvas texture. You can't see it very well on the monitor but when I zoom into the full res image it sings!

Macka - it works because Matt is strange and arty

Matt - I can pick horizontals based on my chair. It has a built-in motor that tilts me to view the image correctly and then I just read off the built-in inclinometer

Actually, there is a serious side to this SP.

I suffer from chronic tinnitus and vertigo. Anyone who has had either knows how awful it can make you feel. Having them both together much of the time presents a few problems in your day-to-day life. Sometimes you just feel like crap.

When I saw this thread, I was keen to "stick a pic" in, but today I don't think I could hold the camera steady enough to take a decent image. Feeling like crap gave me the idea to PP a portrait to represent today's life experience.

However, I realise that there are many, many people with more serious problems than those I am dealing with, so I consider myself fortunate in that way.

Laughter is the best medicine! :D

This is a fine image John. Well lit and tack sharp.

However, I prefer the first image you posted here.

The hat and the glint of mischief in your eyes make it a more interesting image IMHO.

Geoff - An amazing image. It is so un-you. I think 99% of the time I see you you are smiling or happy (even when 1/3 awake) and this is sooooo serious. If I was critiquing this (which I'm not  ) I'd say your hair is getting lost in the dark parts of the backgorund. Not that I'd know cos I lost my hair awhile back and can't find it anywhere.

Tim - I really like the image bot composition & treatment

Trevor - this make me think schizophrenice for some reason.
