ES May - Street Candid

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Forum rules
Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Not sure if this qualifies.

Taken at a stall at the "Street Markets" during the Urban Country Festival.

Are the markets an organised "Event". Probably not. Only posted it a day or two ago but I think it fits the theme so here it is.

Dion, if you remember who was your biggest protagonist and deuteragonist, you will note that they are both no longer active members of the forum. Don't mistake a little bit of discussion and two squeaky wheels for a groundswell of opinion, one way or the other.

OK here's my first attempt at street candid photography. A bit overexposed I think.

Taken with the 18-70 at 25mm.

Nice one Brad, I recognise the spot, near DJ and behind the stage of the amphitheatre right ? Nice work getting well within the 50mm "bonus" focal length. You did great to avoid any of them looking up at you.. (how did you do it?)

Glen,

That is true, but there were in fact more than two ... there were several. I also got a number of PMs and some people decided that the best way to get at me was to dig up my personal information (birth date, address, phone number, etc etc) as a demonstration of the 'invasion of privacy' I had committed by taking a candid photo.

Craig, you're spot on with the location.

I actually went there planning to get a candid shot of the men playing chess but ended up with this instead.

I had been standing near them for some time watching a game of chess. I suppose I had just blended in to the environment or whatever. :)

Well good work there are some great characters that frequent the giant chess board, but I generally don't have the camera at the ready when I go past (shopping time...). It's nice to be able to recognise a place, atleast for me I feel a stronger connection with the photo and those in it.

Dion,

Very sorry to hear that, I thought it was quite a striking photo, as much for the backdrop as the subject. I didn't think your photo was intended to cast the model in a bad light, but reflected the situation. If one doesn't want to be photographed a certain way in public, don't act or dress that way in public. A photograph is just a permanent record of a vision any passerby could have.

My brother-in-law brought it with him when he came out for a holiday from the UK. I have the cheaper version than the one now being marketed. The one problem is when sun shines on the LCD screen at certain angles but I don't think that this can be solved. Its invaluable to me as someone who takes a lot of candid shots.

In the four months I have posted on this site, it has been very rare indeed for someone to comment with extreme negativity regarding my street photography in relation to the privacy issue. On the contrary, I have received a great deal of support for my work.

It does seem that the pendulum has swung the other way, and I think that is in part due to the lovely candids you've shared with us since joining Shelia, I can think of another few members that have shared thoughtful and provoking candids all recieving on the whole very positive reviews.

I think it is about time we dropped this privacy rubbish.

The Australian constitution lacks a Bill of Rights so there is no guaranteed ”right to privacy” with regard to photographs taken of another person! The only way an individual can protect themselves from being photographed is to hold their hand to their face or turn away.

There are some provisos applicable to the web and media: you can’t use a persons image in advertising without their permission, the pics are not defamatory and last but not least, that the photos aren’t indecent, offensive or DEMEAN the people in them.

My belief is that the word demean is the joker in this pack. If a person has lost everything in life but life itself does a photo of this person demean them or the photographer? A philosophical question that is only answerable by the individual.

Fair enough guys - I was just stating my personal point of view. Each person is responsible for the photos that they take, and what they do with those photos is entirely up to them and their own beliefs/conscience.

I realise that this was an issue in the past (not by me). And if I don't agree with a photo ... I don't comment - so just because there are no negative comments, doesn't mean that everyone necessarily agrees with the photo.

Just because we can do something, doesn't automatically mean we should.

Just voicing a different point of view. :)

Everyone may disagree with me, but shouldn't this thread be devoted to the critique of the images posted here?

Couldn't all the discussion of the ethics and legalities of candid photography go into a seperate thread?

I'm all for discussion, but it seems to be hijacking the thread. Am I wrong?

Macka - I think starting/moving this discussion to a new thread may only encourage even more speculation on the rights/wrongs of this 'delicate' issue. Hopefully things will calm down and we will view the works of our talented members here without controversy. Shall I tempt fate and say that from this point on, we only want to see street candid photos without the discussion of whether it's a wrong or right? :D

Well, Geoff, I'm not particularly fussed whether it gets discussed, people can discuss all they like, I'd just rather not see that happen for pages and pages in a thread meant to be devoted to images and critiques.

I posted this yesterday in another thread and it was suggested that I might like to post it here also.

The guy is my coffee drinking buddy, but I snapped him unawares when he was answering his mobile.

Image

Possibly therefor doesn't qualify.
I'll try and get a more candid qualifier.
I think I'll take my camera each day when I go for coffee but I better take the 70-200 - no maybe I'll stick with the 85mm 1.4 cause I luv it.

I'm another who finds it really difficult to take street candids, but would love to do more of it - gotta work on the confidence thing. I took my camera to work and went wandering one lunch time to try my hand.

I took a few snaps of this chap who always seems to be at King George Square sellng the Big Issue. He eventually noticed me and actually seemed quite flattered. Must get a print for him sometime.

This was taken a bit early for the challenge (April 24) - I hereby disqualify myself :D but thought I'd share anyway. Will try again soon.

Cheers

First try at a candid, certainly outside of my usual subjects. Thanks John for the challenge, I think :? :?

Financial well being.

It was a nice Saturday afternoon on the Newcastle foreshore and I was taking some photos of the jetboats. I also tried my hand at a few candids. Taken with 300mm at f6.3, 1/200s.

Cheers,

André

Here's my contribution, as with most other posts this is something that I don't normally do. Taken with 70-300 @ 300 - not brave enough to get any closer!

This is scary stuff - the bag lady chased me and the salty sea dog hosed me.

Both unknown to me and taken with the 50/1.4.

I still haven't mustered the confidence to have ago at this excersize, and after what Mr griffin has posted
(This is scary stuff - the bag lady chased me and the salty sea dog hosed me) I am starting to think that this may not be for me :( :(

Still a few days to go, maybe I will have a crack, I will just stay away from bag ladies and salty seadogs

There have been some great shots on this thread so far... glad to see that some people are pushing at their comfort barriers... I haven't had a chance to go out and take one of my own yet, but I hope to do so before the month is out...

I hope Sheila's thinking ahead for the theme for the new month of June
Cheers, John

I don't think this guy was entirely happy I was pointing a camera at him.
