Sherbrook Forest Pics

Hi there,

Went out to Sherbrook forest in the Dandenongs today in the hope of chasing some birds around. I guess it was too cold for them so I went hunting landscapes instead.

I'm looking for feedback on these as I'm not sure how they turned out. I had a hard time finding spots that weren't 'cluttered' or messy looking.


All taken with the D2X and 18-70 lens with CPL. Looong shutter speeds

I just love the composition of number four and they are all well exposed but they are all just a tad oversaturated for me

Paul #3 then #4 for me. Like Marco I think these are a bit over sat (especially the greens), but I wouldn't tone it down too much. That's a damn fine camera isn't it

Interesting... my fave's are number 1 and 2

Oversaturation definately seems to be a major problem I have in postprocessing. Do you think it could be my colourblindness and me trying to overcompensate? Or would it more likely be my monitor?.... Or even just my pre-wired personal preference? Either way it's something that people always seem to comment on!

...And yes it's a damn fine camera. Took some bird photos today (no keepers ...couldn't get a clear shot) in light that the D70's Autofocus wouldn't nearly have coped with

Nice series of rainforest shots, my faves being 2 and 4. Sherbrook Forest is such a beautiful area and I love going there when I visit Melbourne.

I must admit, I agree with Stubbsy on the over-sat bit. Much too green and punchy but this can easily be fixed.

Great photos, none-the-less.

Beautiful shots and definitely too green. Could be your monitor. Only way to know is to get it calibrated. I just had mine done, and it was apparantly too blue.

love the first one due to the exposure and colours.

the last one, the WB seems to be off.

I love them. I found them to be very green too. In the second one maybe id clone out the yellow leaf as "everything" is green and my eye ran straight to that leaf.

Ok... Well it took me a while but I just edited the photos with your comments in mind. (Mostly lowered the green saturation).

What do you guys think?

I love this place too, and can't wait to venture back on a foggy morning! I know what you mean about messy and cluttered looking, I found it difficult to photograph too (and the leeches were bloody annoying )

The second lot posted look much better, not as 'green'! Where abouts is that bridge? I might have to go searching for it as it will look great in fog. Here are my attempts at Sherbrooke Forest if you're interested Paul.

I plan to go there soon on a foggy morning too... but I'll have to buy some extra layers of clothes first

Will let you know the name of the park where the bridge is when I get the Melways out of the car on the way back from getting dinner

I don't have the D2X under control... it controls me.... Yes it's THAT good

The bridge was at 'Kays Picnic Ground' on Monbulk Road... Page 124 D3 in the Melways for those playing at home It's the first bridge down the walking track... only 20m or so in.

It's a beautiful spot for a wander around, I used to live on the edge of the Sherbrooke forest a few years ago when I lived in The Basin...

I went for a wander today too, up at the Cora Lynn Falls as Cambarville (will post a couple of piccies in a tick)...

The composition of 3 + 4 are terrific, the greens are a smidge strong but I reckon you can get away with it for water/forest shots like these...

Seem mighty sharp and contrasty, good detail too, you're driving that D2X well...

The first version of the last one almost has a blue cast to it, as though the WB is too cool...

Looks like ti must have been a still day up there for exposures that long to have nice sharp foliage...

Hmmm, tempted to do a subtle de-sat on the wooden bridge?

Thanks for the map refeence of the bridge too, I'll have to go for a sticky up that way myself, it's sooo relaxing wandering qround these areas...
