Same shoot as my previous images of Salamander Bay but this image converted to mono. Shot with Canon 17-40.

Its a lovely shot Sheila in terms of its composition. Having seen the colours available in your other sunrise series though I think I favour the colour versions.

Cheers - I alway enjoy checking out your stuff so thanks.

Sheila

My comments are going to be biased since I've already seen the colour shot, but for me there just isn't enough contrast in this to make the scene work for me in B & W

WOW, fortunate timing, great work! The composition of the light, through the opening in the clouds, onto teh water, with the runabout boat framed nicely. Great, entertaining pic for prolonged enjoyment :D

Thanks but this is a different image!! As I am heavily into mono, I much prefer this to the other images which really are just postcard type pics :) I like the moody and high contrast of mono generaly. It allows one to examiine the photograph without having to deal with bright colours. But, hey, thats just me!

Cheers

Hi Sheila,

I think this is a great shot which shows a lot how composition
has been applied by you in a great way.
I would say, this photo doesn't need colour.
I'd also say, prior to colour photography being available this
would have also been a great photo back then.
There is something about BW photography which places a higher demand on composition, lighting.

Just my 20 cents,
CD

Very strong in B&W Sheila. I like the grunt of this one. For my money the composition is great, ditto the tonal range is nice & subtle in the foreground. I don't mind the very dark and foreboding B&W, but if I were doing it for myself I might have hit the clouds with a little more levels to see if there was just a touch more drama in there too, but I still love it as it is. Nice!
Best wishes

I tend to agree with Colcam, also wouldn't mind cutting out the sky altogether, just to see the effect, as the contrast in the lower two thirds of the image is a strong statement in itself. Despite all these comments, a lovely brooding image.

i quite like it...i didn't get a chance to see the coloured versions :)

any chance of adding a bit more noise to create more of a moody sunrise?

Terrific lighting, and excellent composition... Very compelling image, nice subtle shadow detail on the pier/pathway, love the moody feel to this...

Your compositional skill and eye for light shows through in this... It's worth printing and hanging...
