we went back after the ospreys again today.
This time the light was lousy. the overcast conditions didnt lift until late morning by which time the action had passed.
I had to boost the iso to 800 to get this @ 1/500sec f8.
normally would want 1/1000 plus for sharp flight shots and low sweet morning light to let you see eyes etc properly.
this is full frame cropped to vertical
loathe to post any osprey shots after cows go moos efforts yesterday but I still liked this one despite the light.
did I waste my time?

Anyone else would be going into a comfortable retirement after nailing a shot like this Steve but we all know what high standards you set for yourself. As far as I can see, the exposure and clarity are spot on but the only let down is the orientation of the bird's head, losing detail against the dark background of the wing.
Still - what a cracker of a shot. No time waster, that's for sure.

steve... even though the conditions may not have been perfect for you i think it's a great capture. I would be extremely chuffed to get a shot like that.

Simon, after the shot cows go moo posted yesterday, I was almost embarrassed to post this.
The light was much sweeter yesterday. If the light was like yesterday this may well have been better. I have quite a few osprey shots from the last two days but not as close as this. I got 2 closer but the light was so crummy that they werent sharp. the sun wasnt even out and you really need that low angle soft morning light to nail this sort of thing.
I got a pelican today also but it suffers from the same issues.
still better than sitting watching the simpsons though I guess.

Hi Steve,
Considering the conditions, you have really captured this Osprey well. This has been one of the birds I have tried to photograph and have been unsuccessful so far.
