Right place, right time, but...

Last week I went for a wander to St Stephens Baptist cemetary at Newtown with Matt K and his charming wife Philo. I was carefully framing this first shot which I quite like



Out of the corner of my eye I see three young men approaching who were in obvious high spirits from a late night (or maybe an early morning). They size me up and can see what I'm doing (I was deliberating quite a bit framing this since i wanted the DOF to be right). So what happens when you mix alcohol with testosterone? You guessed it - one of the group breaks off and runs screaming into my carefully framed image:



Undeterred I say thanks mate you got into my shot! Then his mate yells out "Want me to jump through for you. Not much time and the camera was set wrong, so guess what I said



I got off a single shot. Now my problem is I wasn't ready for this. I love this image, but wish so much the guy was in focus. Because there is something about this last shot I've played around a bit. I have an alternate version, but well it's a selective colour one so maybe a bit cliched - regardless I quite like it too. Thought I'd share it as well.



I'd really like your comments on these shots, especially the last two.

Stubbsy, I really like the fourth, but rather than where you have done a full desaturation to B&W, which smacks of a special effect (which your image doesn't need to be good), maybe a partial desaturation which keeps the colour but still has the impact of the fourth without the obvious PP.

The F**kwit factor?

#1 - I like how you've got a line that draws you into the image. For my tastes (which seem to change daily) there's too much going on for a simple brain like mine to process - I can't figure out what the primary subject is.

#2 - I see de-evolution at work

#3/4 - prefer the selective colour version. It brings out the subject better. I think #3 is weakened by the colour of the ground in the background being almost the same colour as the sandstone, whereas the the B&W brings out the edge contrast between fore and background.

the last one is a nice effect to exentuate the image but the 3rd original is conceptually strong enough to be left as is

Wendell, as I say in the text he yelled at me "want me to jump through?" I said "go for it", not expecting anything to happen and he launched through giving me no time to recompose or adjust aperture etc. I got off a single shot (camera was in single mode) - the one here is it.
