2006Abbey Jousting

this is by far and away my fav shot of the 2300+ images I loaded to the pc tonight after two very solid days of doing little other than taking shots of people beating the crap out of each other, booze hounding, chasing gypsie wenches and having a lot of fun.
(no animals were harmed in the making of this image!)

I actually got slack and decided that I would simply shoot jpeg all weekend. It paid off too when my work pic-ed called and demanded I get a shot of a kid who had managed to cop an arrow in his eye somehow. I dont yet know the story there but that pic is to be in the Courier-Mail Monday on page7. (my least fav shot of the weekend of a kid in a stretcher - not what I wanted to take pics of today!)

great picture! i must admit that i didn't realise people still went in for the whole running each other down with an oversize skewer thing. i wonder what public liability insurance is worth for an event like that??

I wanted to go to the Abbey Medieval Festival... but lacking transport.. i was stuck on the couch watching tele... building an online shop for a tackle company and teaching Dug how to use a SB800

Looks like fun tho!

I've known a lot of these guys for well over a decade and will be doing a lot of work with them in the near future as they need more folio for attracting sponsors.

DJ - public liability is covered by each of the individual groups plus there is the overall coverage by the Abbey for the event generally. Nightmarish!

Tim, my shoulders are wishing I was taking it easy on the couch or coding sites. (though my sql and php skills are sadly lacking when it comes to re coding stores)

Great shots Mark. Over here in the UK I was watching on TV a Medieval Jousting and other various forms of fighting, which incidently takes place once a year just a mile up the road from where I'm staying. It looked ridiculously dangerous and I wondered the same about insurance. They showed you some of the injuries some of the blokes have sustained over the years. It's lucky the blokes haven't been killed

Suzanne, if they aren't too peeved at me having a shot in today's Courier-Mail of the boy who copped an arrow in the eye, I will be taking a pictorial team up there next year as well and will be recruiting from here.

and... grrrr.... Some twit at the paper input one of my two shots on page 7 credited to Marc Robertson, who they still confuse with me despite me having changed my name from Robinson to Greenmantle back in October. There's going to be hell to pay for that in the office tonight!

Good to hear your gonna get a crew together for next year,, I have a friend an old photographer, now does videos, he went and saw the abby, got a pass to go do video's for them,, he said next year he is lining me up for his photographer, but if you know all those horsey guys,, I would rather be with your group... so please keep me in mind for next year,,

Sure, I'll be giving a shout out as soon as I have details on when I can get more media passes to jousting events.

Looks like I am going to get a gallery of 15shots from the day in the Courier-Mail online Qld section and I've had to write a story I have to read in the "studio" (ie:closed conference room) for it to be recorded as a sound file.... yikes.

I had two shots published on page 7 today but either the sub editors or someone in pictorial goofed and credited another shooter in the early editions.

I had one of the knights come through the airport on Thursday from New Zealand ..... armour looks unreal on an xray !!! (Had me momentarily very very confused ) I asked if he was going to the Abbey, and he was most chuffed that I knew about it
Would have loved to have come up, but couldn't get out of work.
Oh well, there's always next year

Rel, I wish I could have seen the xray of the armor - it would have been a fantastic stock image for the library I am starting! Was it Graham Nixon or Jezz Smith coming through from NZ? We also had a brilliant Belgian jouster who had a very cool sense of humour.

The Abbey tournament is now held in such high regard - local talent is getting invites to perform overseas - both in NZ, and in Europe and they are now seeking major sponsors so the show can get off the ground.

Marco - it's been tagged the original extreme sport for a verrrry good reason. lol
