Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

i'm assisting

Postby wendellt on Sun Jul 23, 2006 5:02 am

heya people

i finally took steps to fullfill one of my desires to photograph fashion editorial.

since i'm self taught and have no formal training i need to train under a studio photographer for at least 3 years. That's what all the editors at fashion mags say and they are right there are no shortcuts.

So i found myself a prominent sydney fashion photographer to assist
so for the next 3 years+ part time on the weekends i'll be making coffee, rubbing feet and assisting

My job was to setup scrims carry stuff around, test strobes, some assisting in lighting concepts and hold the all important reflector

image on the left, test shot of the other studio assistant with the strobe, added the frame for artistic purposes, but couldn't add a smile
as you can see the strobe light mixed with the available light is gorgeous
image on the right is of the fashion stylist preparing the garments
Image

The pro photo preferred available light manipulated by two scrims blocking one side of the room off and letting in light from 2 windows. He also has great taste I love sophisticated muted colours - such mood!

here is the result
Image

i shot these while holding a reflector, camera in 1 hand, and i shot from the side

the pro photog got the model doing a continuous latino dance sequence. It was beautiful i love movement, excellent technique to get a numebr of freestyle dynamic shots

if every shoot is going to be like this one, i'm lucky and i know it

Wendell,

Very well done and wish you all the best in your future endeavours.

I think you have a fantastic talent not so well recognised on here as it should. Very professional, great skill and great lighting techniques. I also know you do little processing before posting and I know what these images look like when processed. They are always standouts.

Good luck Wendell.

Three years is the bare minimum really and I'd be prepared for being an assitant for at least 6-8. I was working with one yesterday who was in his 8th year of doing it and was just beginning to be able to get people to pay attention to him...

Very nice Wendell... Much more interesting that the usual anorexic models from the past... A good bit of creativity and movement...

Love the Latin Dance sequence - you should sell it as a triptych...

Have to agree with Leek about these shots, they're a little different from your normal stuff and just leap off the screen. They have a richness about them that really appeals. Great stuff!!

thankyou very much
it's been a long road but its' only the start

after shooting 1 year of fashion events and fashion, getting runway shots published and canning two big commercial jobs doesn't qualify you for editorial work

leigh i met someone last week who was assisting in his 6th year
so i know a long road ahead and alot to learn

half of gettign anywhere in fashion photography is about who you know - unfortunately

i'll keep people updated on tricks of the trade i can share
