last night at the David Jones Spring/Summer collection launch

Mischa Barton was the key guest

red carpet is hard out of all the blinks miss poses, crap in the background and other photographers flashes and missed eye contact i only managed to get a few keepers

i shoot manual expsoure, aperture and white balance because metering is useless with the flurry of flashes, hollywood lights lit up the scene
so i matched the white balance top the lights 3700Kelvin

these images are whats left over form the pictures i submit to the papers
1/200 f4.5 ISO500 available light, this one is more of an arty one got the shadows from the press below(lights behind us)
Image

used fill flash on this one, you only get about 4 secs to get your shot mischa moved along the red carpet swiftly
some of the pother paps scream out to get her attention others tell her how to pose, while others call her sweetheart, darling, i just screamed out 'beautiful dress mischa', didn't get a look.
Image

this is what happens when you don't stand your ground, you get pushed out by the hoarding press mob
Image

after the runway show, the beautiful dress comment demanded her attention. When i need to do critical shots i place the flash on the hotshoe no time to freak around with my sc-29 cord
Image

available light

Some good shots there, I'd be interested to see the ones that were submitted to the papers as well. She's an attractive girl, and you did well to get front position from that swarm of media at some stage.

thanks man

I really dislike red carpet, too uncontrollable and fast
i got there late but somehow found myself front row right at the end
which is good because at the end of the red carpet the stars knwo they have to stop to pose for last shot

all the big guns from getty fairfax, news limited, wire and icon get the first stage on red carpet, if you nestle yourself in there with them you get their setup shots but usually it's hard

for exclusivetivity reasons i can't post anything that is submitted to the papers

i can only show you on my pda device at a minimeet or something like that

Good stuff Wendell. Rubbing shoulders with the celebs now :D Man I don't envy you with red carpet stuff. While it's good and all to be that close to the celebs, I know in the rush you don't get to admire them...just snap snap snap away.

Yep!! Too true. I have done a little red carpet stuff and found it EXTREMELY territorial and slightly agro, lots of pushing and shoving and there are a few paps out there who will go to any length to get 'that shot'. Not my idea of fun really, interesting, but not fun.

Saw this on the news this morning, and thought you'd be there somewhere :)

Nice shots - but I think Megan Gale is much sexier :)

Well done (yet again)

thanks guys and gals

my first red carpet was MTV awards that was nuts over 100 media even international got there 3 hours early got he worst spot on the side
MTV stay away!! camera knocked down a few times, no toilets, 5 hours in on the red carpet and in the media room

should be noted i have high social etiquette
i'm a social photographer not a paparazzi!
I don't chase them off the red carpet

I only take the stars pictures on the red carpet or at a media setup shot situation as soon as they are out of that like socialising after the event i don't try to take their picture unless they ask me to

this is true for Megan Gale spoke to her many times after gigs socially but she doesn't let you take her picture, she has a publicist protecting her
fromt he paps

I agree - aussie girls all the way! That last shot is the best for me, but I do like the first 'arty' shot.

I quite like the second and last photos Wendell, but they're not up to your usual high standards. Seeing the media scrum in the 3rd shot I can see why.

I heard that she was paid $100,000 by David Jones just to sit on her arse at the fashion show. What a waste of money! I just don't understand the cult of celebrity. Until yesterday, I'd never even heard her name.

yeah publicity is important
if david jones has that much money to promote their new range
their doing well actually i heard in a stock report david jones is doing very well this year, seems like their ambassadors Megan Gale, youth ambassadors Samantha harris and Abbey Lee are doing well

Myer only have Jenifer Hawkins

should also be noted David Jones supports many charities and celebrities help generate that money so rich celebrities have their place int he world

Jenifer is a fantastic woman - she's Miss Universe!

just saying David Jones publicity engine is on full octane with many ambassadors compared to Myer they soley rely on Jenifer

I can't help but feel that $100 large could have been spent more fruitfully. Surely David Jones can find a celebrity who's willing to donate their appearance money to charity? Then again, maybe I'm just a grumpy old bugger

Money well spent on David Jones' behalf considering the amount of publicity that they have receive in the last few days and the amount of people that have compared David Jones' marketing budget eg Misha and Megan over that of Myer.

:P I'm salivating... Your images don't disappoint Wendell. :)

I've been a long time Mischa fan since she starred in the movie Pups. In fact, she was the reason I'm hooked on the OC.
