A Couple of Urban Night Shots
Hey, I'm a noob on this site and I would appreciate some harsh critisism on a few of my shots.
I am based in Perth, just finishing Yr 12. I shot these with my old D50 using the standard shitty lens kit. I get my D80 in 2 weeks with a Sigma 18-200mm. Should be a bit better 
Anyway here are a couple of my shots: This one was using a shitty little detatchable fisheye adapter on my 18-55mm so it is NOT SHARP!! 
ISO 400, 15 sec, f.6.3 
ISO 200, f.22, 1min I would greatly appreciate any feedback, Cheers Harry
First of all, welcome to the forums.
Dont feel bad because you dont have any of the luxurious gears around. They can certainly improve the overal quality of a picture, but a good picture does not necessary needs to be taken with an expensive gear. 1st one is cool tho but the attention did not bring to the group of people here, but rather to the outter distorted sides of the picture. Rather a closer/tighter zoom without the fisheye adaptor will be better.
Welcome Harry - what a debut with two wonderful pics.
The first pic is amazing and reminds me of the pics taken during the civil war in the 1860’s. My only comment would have been to have had a wee bit more foreground. In the second pic the mystery of what is happening gives this pic a lot of cred. On a small point - please read the FAQ’s re maximum longest side of pic(s) posted at 800pxl - this enables people with small monitors not having to scroll to see all of your pics   Chris

The fisheye effect is definitely cool - are those your friends in the picture? :O:O You get your D80 just in time for TEE. Would you like me to look after it? haha ---

Adam, Yeh, I kinda like that effect, looks cool in some pics. lol, I'll have to pass this time on that one... i think i'd die of stress without it! sirch55, Cheers for that fedback, sorry about the pic sizes. They'll be right next time. I promise I agree with u about the foreground. Unfourtunatley that was a bit of a one-off to get thoe guys to sit there for a full 15 seconds!
Yi-P, Yeh the gear is a bit of a bugger but I try not to let it hold me back too much from getting a good shot. I really regret using that fisheye in that shot. The only reason I did it was because it was the first night I had it and I really wanted to give it a try. Oh well. U win some u loose some... Harry

My fav of the two would have to be #2. To me (and I'm hoping I'm not completely missing the point of this photo or reading too much into it), the photo gives the sense of silence, agility and urgency in the night - like the intruder. I really like shots that are able to convey some sort of emotion or feeling and this one does it for me.

Firstly, I wouldn't worry too much about gear 'cos, as has already been said, it's not always about the gear. If you haven't got an eye for what's going to look good in frame then all the top pro stuff in the world ain't gonna help you. I like what you've done in these shots though I wasn't quite sure where to devote my attention in the first shot. I lingered mostly on the graffiti but then found the reflections in the water on the left, then came back to the cracks in the brickwork to the right of the group. I was distracted by the Give Way Sign/Traffic Lights shadow. I must admit, the people in the shot didn't sway me really one way or the other except for the fact that the only one in focus looks like Naveen Andrews from "Lost". Strange that, in this shot, he's the only one who isn't 'lost'. Now, tell me you meant that!!!
As for the second shot - there's a lot going on, and it's all pretty good. The colours, the props and the sense of mystery about it are really appealing. I look forward to what you're going to come up with when you get the new gear. If nothing else, it may lead you to believe you're taking better shots when, in reality, you're probably just feeling more positive about the shots you would have taken anyway. Either way, it's a win. Sure, whatever's strapped to the front of the camera body will make a difference but not as much as what you've got strapped between your ears. Keep up the good work. Simon

Wow, your right he does, uncanny! Welcome to the forum, I like both the shots they show a keen eye for the unusual take which I appreciate. I do have a quick question about the last shot.. it appears like there is a shadow of a person, is it a shadow ? I'm not sure it confuses me.

Thanks heaps. Now to respond, gunn parker, Yeh the spot is the woolstores in freo. The people were just some randoms looking at me curiously so i just went up to them and asked if they wanted to be in a photo... They were stoked! They jumped up right away and got right into it! ladybird, That is in fact the idea of many of my shots. I have a few where I do the sort of shadows of hooded and dodgy sort of people in some different locations. Thanks for that. I have put up another shot that I took in order to convey an similar theme. Manta, I have to admit I have never actually watched Lost but that is rather ironic that he looks like him. I can't wait to get the new gear. I know it won't make me a better photographer but it may very well allow me to gain sharper, clearer images in varied conditions. As opposed to. Well. A d50! Alpha_7 and Oscar, That is me hanging on the fence and I just set off a flash in front of me to get the image of an intruder's shadow, but nothing distinguishing in it. I just wanted to have a 'shadowy figure' and what better whay to do that than with a shadow! This is the next shot from that set. 
wow nice shots there mate, i agree with all that has been said.
but one thing confused me- you said you used a flash in the last shot.. how did you fire it when the D50's onboard speedlight doesnt have wireless capabilities? very creative with the shadows though! good luck with the exams! my time has been done.. amen to the hsc! -julz
i used a crappy hotshoe mount full-manual flash which i took with me and fired useing the tester button during the exposure.
still, it did a great job! range appears to be quite good too...
