Cowra Japanese Gardens in Winter

Postby Colcam on Sat Nov 11, 2006 8:46 pm

For anyone travelling south through NSW, it is worth the swing west to go through Cowra to see the Japanese Gardens there. Magnificent. It was a grey day indeed when I was there, but that only served to soften the shadows. Every angle is a good one in the Japanese style. Go Look.

Nice images. Number two is fantastic.

I haven't been to the Gardens since I was in primary school. I might have to take a trip over one day, it's only a 90 minute drive.

I haven't been there for years!

That second photo is amazing. Are you sure you haven't taken a photo of a painting? If it weren't for the foreground I would swear it was an oil painting!

This is a great group of images. While I like #1, I find it a little distracting compositionally since I'm not sure if the focal point is the building or the stream since both are fairly dominant in the shot. #2 is the standout both compositionally and in terms of the dynamic range you've captured. Going by your comments and the other images my gut feel is the sky is digitally manipulated, but if it is I don't care it makes for a great shot.

I have now added this place to my must visit list.

Thanks folks for the comments. Peter, on the point of interest, I simply found it amazingly hard to make up my mind no matter which way I looked. The Japanese are masters at doing this. No matter where you go, the scene is framed well and aesthetically correct.

No. 2 did get a hit from PS on the sky as I am a sucker for a good cloud or two and it was such a very bright overcast day, I wanted a little impact somewhere. The viewpoint, for those who venture there, is a hill in the gardens which allows many such views.

For Yi-P, this was a straight shot off the meter, but if needed, I am not above a lot of selective adjustment layers to get the contrast and light spot on locally. The trees were very dark.
Sus it out on the 'net and GO. More coming soon. I will going back next Easter for sure with more time on my way to Canberra.
