Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature. Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread. last nights storm
Here is my first attempts at lightnig shots.

Agreed, first shot is a fantastic capture. I'd be tempted to crop out the small bolt on the LHS, and do some curves work to try to bring out more of those amazing colours in the sky on the right.
I've never tried lightning shots, it must be worth the hard work when you get something like this  So join in the chorus, and sing it one and all!
I'm going to agree with Patrick, and also suggest maybe cloning out the whatever it is in the top left corner
... or even perhaps cropping the left of frame slightly to remove the object in the corner and the bolt. A simple hand-over-the-crop spot makes it look better to me. Great shot otherwise, nice colour!

Chet, I was running 10 second exposure with 200 iso and f5.6 for the first image. The second image was at 20 seconds and caught three separate bolts. Rooboy and Daniel, it took me about twenty goes to finally get a decent one. Ihave done a little to the exposure by darkening it a little. I have cropped out the left and it does look great, thanks.
Here are some extras for those of you who wanted more colour and a crop.
Do you prefer reds or blues? I have a balanced effort I think works last. C&C please. I dont have a decent photo editing package as yet. Soon. Regards Colin 
Last one for me Colin, although I feel it needs a bit more work that would be easy with PS. The crop works better than the original too.
You have a good keeper there though. The detail in the bolt is fantastic and the addition of the break in the clouds really make it a wonderful shot. I do like the lights in the distance too, it is as if the bolt was hunting down the only civilisation around!
