Bums, Vertical Leaps and Emotion.

Had an interview at Glenelg with two other photographers this morning and once that was over; what else do 3 guys do with their big cameras other than aim them at the chics?

I've only ever photographed Volleyball before once - and that was indoors - 'twas a nightmare. Bit different outside as ISO50-ISO200 still gets you crisp as shots but these athletes are *quick*. By the quarter finals, the girls were jumping as high and as fast as the blokes Eventually got to be able to judge the play and aim the camera at where the action was going intuitively but that was after 5 hours and ~700 frames. Shot tight for most of the day, lots of background carp and you still need some DOF to get around the focus issues on the net and do two shots. First time I've used JPEG for a while as well - most of these are straight out the camera.

for action shots its hard to compose right, especially on a canon where all your focus points are in the middle but you did very well for fast action shots and i think the Dof is good enough

May i ask what lens you used as they turned out great. I think the DOF is good in the shots as well.

Have these been cropped much? Did you shoot landscape for most of the shots?

Thanks Wendell; was in AI Servo for most of it and the 1D2 did a pretty good job at tracking the subjects from when they were standing to when they jumped (and had their face obscured by the net). Its just a shame if you aren't tracking a player, something happens, and you suddenly hit the * focus button only to lock focus on the ball/crowd/sand - ah well, perils of fast action.

@ Garlino; started off with a 70-200/2.8L IS mm then moved onto the 300/4L as I got a bit better at picking the spots and the action. Really tried to shoot tight for most of the afternoon - all but the 2nd were done with the 300/4L just on the edge of the court. With those two lenses, if stuff is out of focus, soft or blurred, you know it isn't the lens.

@ Oscar; looking through, about a quarter in landscape, guess the camera just feels nicer in landscape haha. Very slight cropping on a few shots to remove the odd banner (1st had more time to setup and compose).

Ronza - exceptional shooting in today's harsh light.

For some reason #1, #3 and #4 appeal to me.

I know that BBJ will be along later today to comment. Glenelg is one of his favourite places to shot when in Adelaide, wonder why  BTW: have you got a photog pass for the 'Tour Down Under' on Tuesday evening

I was on my way to Adelaide today and siad to the young fella on our way down that i would have loved to be at the bay today to check the white pointers out and birdlife out and bugger me dead while having dinner with Fozzie he shows me this post, i am with his pics.

Well done Ronza, you've really capture the event nicely, and well you've got the new camera singing in your hands, it does seem to handle rich colours very well!
