Kite Boarding Action

Postby Bob G on Sun Feb 04, 2007 10:59 am

Went down to Pincushion to catch a bit of action late this afternoon.

Very overcast and windy and there were a lot of kite boarders out.

This one gave the most spectacular action of the whole bunch.

Filled a 2gb card in no time.

C&C Please

No 1 -a quick spin around

No.2 - a horizontal layout

No.3 - look mum - one hand

great action shots.

I'm hoping to take my new 80-400 out to capture the action at St Kilda beach when the wind picks up.

out of interest, what focal length did you use to capture these?

thanks

Guys - I was lucky enough to get a new 300VR 2.8 just before Christmas and this is the lens used for these shots.

I wasn't as close to the action as I would have liked and these shots are cropped quite a bit, although it's nice to have those extra megapixels of the D2x to enable you to be able to crop and still have good detail

Cheers

Bob - very good action shooting. I especially like # 3. Have you tried the Nikkor 300mm VR with the Hi-Speed crop on, and also a TC-14E11 or TC-17E11 for additional reach :?:

Fozzie,

Yes I have the 1.7 T/C now and I have the 1.4 on backorder.

I haven't used the HSC mode because I can achieve the same result later and don't need the extra processing speed.

I wanted to use the 300 by itself without any T/C and was very impressed with its focussing speed, contrast and the VR works extremely well with handheld.

Wasn't game to wade out in the water with the gear, surf and surrounding action -

These are great Bob. It was good of this guy to put on such a show for you. :)
I would not be keen to wade in any surf with bare gear either. It does not swim well.

#2 is great, muscles rippling gives great dramatic effect.

I wade out into the surf all the time, bit silly I suppose, there'll no doubt come a day when I get dumped and lose my gear but hey, by then it'll be time for a new camera!!! :D
