Big Day Outhere are a couple of photos from the adelaide big day out - more to come soon.

The singer purposefully stands up the back of the stage to make it even harder. As soon as the photographers have to leave - they light up the whole stage.GRRR more photos to come - will post them up on my site - http://www.threesongs.net over the next few days

even JJJ's photographer - matt booy was impressed with that shot of tool! they were soo hard to shoot - it was too dark for auto focus to work - and because of the time constraints (about 5 mins) i had to work very quickly!
tool are anti - media. they dont allow anyone to take decent shots of them. they are paranoid. but the thing is, im out to take good shots because it reflects on my work etc.
One or two of the guys from Tool were on JJJ the other day, and they mentioned that the lead singer stands well back in the stage to get a better idea of the sound or something like that - apparently the foldbacks are pretty ordinary? This is what I remember them saying, so don't quote me on it

Two or three lights, any lens on a light-tight box are sufficient for the realisation of the most convincing image. Man Ray 1935. Our mug is smug
Wanker! ![]() I can see the IEM in his ear! Poor excuse ![]()
I used to have a friend who was friends with John 5 out of Manson and who went on Tool backstages and what not.
They -- like most people -- pretty much agree that Maynard is a prick. Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

A big TOOL fan here to Maynard's defense:
You are all entirely missing the point in regards to their performances. Tool are not a run-of-the-mill rock band putting on a show for the PR people (TV, photographers, journalists etc). Listen to a great Tool song (Lateralus, Pushit & 10,000 Days are my first suggestions) and tell me how the vocals fit into the overall soundscape. Maynard is an incredible vocalist, yet he floats at the back of the sound, just as he stands when the band plays. You are being completely paranoid if you believe that he is somehow hiding by standing at the back. Did you notice the four huge screens, with the 4 band members positioned perfectly in front of them? Did you actually watch Maynard perform as a silhouette in front of the screen? The visual show they put on is absolutely second to none, truly surreal and equivalent to Dali/Bunuel. Personally I vastly prefer this to something like Jet bouncing all over the stage saying "Comeon Sydney Make Some Noise!!!!" every 30 seconds. Do you really think that Tool were so concerned with photographers that they kept their first songs dark simply to annoy you? I went to both Sydney shows, the simple, shadowed opening with Stinkfist worked perfectly both times because of the extravagance later. At the Ent Cent, at the music climax of Jambi (2nd song IIRC) they dropped the curtain on the 20x20m Alex Grey artwork, and the effect was simply stunning. This is not a band that jumps through hoops for press approval, and the fans benefit for their persistence in doing things the way they want. Sorry for the rant, but you really are missing the point with Tool. I really like all 3 shots posted, although I wish the Muse shot was a bit wider to capture some of the ambience of their excellent set. So join in the chorus, and sing it one and all!
I don't deny that Maynard is a great singer and writer. I'm more of an APC fan than Tool, but I won't deny that.
He's still a prick, though. Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

a prick? why?
Because he refuses media interviews? I like it, focus on the music and forget about the media! that said, adam likes to get into the media stuff a bit I have some film shots from a friend shot at Macquarie uni of Tool, very impressive ![]() The 10,000 days concert rocked too, Maynard was at the back the whole time (same as the APC concert 2 years ago @ Horden) i kinda like that.. 5D | 16-35L | 35L | 85L | 135L | 70-200F2.8IS | 580EX

Nope. He can refuse all he wants. He pisses off fans and those who work with him with his unruling ego and appetite for using women and pissing them off and their mates. Some of the things I've been told... bleck.
Yup, great singer, though I've also been told that the delays of CD releases for APC were to do with Maynard laying the tracks down. Still... going off topic... GREAT PHOTOS. Seriously. ![]() Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

Yes Maynard is a good singer, and yes he isn't known for being nice.
Yet, Tool isn't doing anything that great, they don't have the skills of the actual progressive rock/metal people, I just don't know why they're considered to be that good, maybe to non musicians... I don't know. But Maynard is a very good singer. Blog: http://grevgrev.blogspot.com

I really like the atmosphere captured in the 2nd photo in the second set of three!
As well as the pose and focus on the CAREFUL in the 2st on in that set! Well captured! Is it coincidence or do you only post in groups of three ![]()
i think that once you start posting more than 3 - people dont look at each individual photo as much - and you dilute your work.
Threesongs, I'm enjoying all of these; they're great. Looking forward to more. Did you get any wider shots, or was it manly just headshots?
You do realise how snobby that sounds, don't you? ![]() ![]() Cheers,
macka a.k.a. Kris
mainly body shots.
these stages are really high up off the ground - and so its hard to get a wide shot from the pit without getting alot of the stage / speakers in the way.
