Theo, while I see this image has its merits its it doesn't appeal to me. To me, it looks like he's been murdered by strangulation around the neck and he's lacking oxygen. The colour transition is distracting (to me).

I can see...I can see what you tried to do, but technical expertise apart, I tend to agree with Geoff. The colour transitions may have worked in a different subject better, but the initial impression of this picture is that the poor man is about to join the next world. We say in Spanish that "sobre el gusto no hay nada escrito" (there is nothing written on taste), which means that I am only offering an opinion.
Now, let's be constractive, if you really like it rather than leaving it as is consider adding some texture to give it even a more abtract look, and print it in a large canvas - it could work. Sometimes, the size of a print can make all the difference to a picture.
Apart from the other comments, I have a bit of an issue with the neck of the t-shirt, being almost a concentric curve to the model's chin. It almost makes it look like a double chin which is not flattering.
Otherwise, I think I see what you are trying to do and looks really good. P Regards, Patrick
Two or three lights, any lens on a light-tight box are sufficient for the realisation of the most convincing image. Man Ray 1935. Our mug is smug
