A Touch From God - Lightning Bolts

Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

I'm joining in the fun for tonight's light show.

I don't normally take photos of lightning but this is one of my very good first attempts 8)

I think I'm not as dedicated as others here, I didnt get out of my room, just took these from the window, through the glass. After watching that lightning programme on TV got me scared enough to head out :oops:

Nice clean skyline to shoot against and a steeple to set it all off on.. Lovely stuff..

sometimes it's nice to be on the inside of the glass.
:)

Atleast you're not getting your gear wet.. I had a few plastic bags.. with holes in them to keep the gear.. a little dry..

I don't blame you for shooting inside. I was actually tempted to borrow my bro's tripod and go outside to take some lightning shots but I figured. Hmmm lightning rod...

Well done YiP, we could use a few storms up here on the north coast, very hot but not much visible storm activity compared to last few years.

great shots
I think the first one would be improved by cropping all the apartment buildings up to the highest guttering so that you have a near black bottom to the picture it would also change the scale of the photo giving it a much wider and grander look

Thanks all for the comments 8)

To share the technical part of the capture, I set the camera/lens close tight to the glass to prevent much glare as possible. The shutter was on bulb and closed when I took the guess of how much 'light' I want in the frame.

Tripod setup was very funny, but tho, it was useful:

Thanks for the point-out. I cropped the original photo and cloned out the border so it looks more of panoramic shape rather than squared off. Then applied some curves/levels and minor colour shifts.

Great captures Yi-P. Well done.

I prefer the second crop of the first picture but somehow the lightning in the second crop doesn't look real in the second version. IMHO maybe the other pp work has changed the lightning too much.

Maybe the second shot would also look better with a similar crop work - also making it a bit narrower in the process.

You have some nice clean shots there. I have tried photographing lightning a few times, still un-successfull so far in getting a good shot.
