Well its been a while coming, but i have finally purchased my digi slr. Heres one of the first shots off it, i was trying for sharp cotrast here, using harsh natural sidelighting and no fill flash. Critique welcome, im still learning :D

It's good that you've got her feeling comfortable in front of the camera, I find that the hardest aspect. Nice crisp focus on the eyes too. To avoid the shiny highlights on the skin you can try diffusing the light somehow, perhaps a thin white sheet between subject and light.

What camera did you get?

EDIT: something I forgot to mention, watch out for how shadows fall across the body and face. There is an annoying one on her right shoulder caused by her chin, it seems too abstract and harsh.

Better than what I can take... :) :) :)

Lovely subject. Looks comfortable.

Harsh shadows on her right shoulder detract for me. I'd be interested to see a little bit of soft lighting from that side

Hotspots on the nose and lower lip need fixing. Easy in PS

Just my opinion.

considering her happy smile, looks and ambience of the photo, i'd like to see less shadows on the left of the face.

shadows to me creates a bit of mood, and i think it's a bit much here. maybe some light from the left just to add a tiny bit of detail... just a suggestion.

Thanks fellas for the replies, am still waiting on the aquistion of photoshop, but am working on it :D Will be paying attn to the shoulder shadow and highlights on face when ps is operational. Am keen to play with this type of portrait where the light can be controlled, reflected etc, another thing on the list (a studio  )
