Something a bit different from me

I was fortunate enough to make it to the Canberra War Memorial at 4:58 p.m. on Saturday. I was let in and got the opportunity to get some shots.

It was a touching ceremony held at the 'going down of the sun' with a lone piper that would have brought a tear to a glass eye.

Anyway, here are my images:

A lonely forecourt on a cold, wet dreary afternoon.



A lone piper signals the end of the day, the dead can now rest, their duty done.



The honor roll of the 13th Battalion. George Sydney Moppett, my wifes Great Grandfather. Killed at Bullecourt, aged 34, widower and father of 3. He still lies, lost, in the fields of France.



At the going down of the sun, a place to remember them.

No. 1 seems a bit dull to me. No. 2 is an excellent photo. Beautiful lighting in that image and very nice contrasty b&w conversion. I like No. 3 also.

Thanks mate. I agree 1 seems a bit dull, which I was hoping to achieve. Maybe I haven't achieved it properly though

great shot in no. 2, very nicely done and the lonely piper really adds a nice touch.

I also like the third one and I'm sure it has a very special significance in your family.

#2 and #3 are my picks here - both are well composed and moving images. Like Alex I find #1 a little dull although I like the shot compositionally. #3 is even more powerful reading your poignant commentary. You do the honour of your wife's great grandfather proud.

#4 really doesn't grab me - the strong foreground running diagonally across the image just traps my eye in either one half of the shot or the other and there's insufficent interest to hold my attention (if that makes sense)

#3 Is my favourite and could be a cover of a book or the Title Page.. its very strong, moving and full of context.

Love #2 as well, something about the light and dark in the shot makes the place feel blessed (if that makes annnnny sense?) it has a very scared and holy feel to it.


#1 is a bit flat and bland for me but composition wise I like it

#4 is a bit of a nothing shot, looks a little soft, composition seems uncomfortable.. doesn't appeal to me.

Thanks for taking the time to look folks.

I wasn't overly sure about number 4, and the weight of opnion is against it. I was trying to make the memorial look like a fortress.

I am a big fan of 3, and have recently orgainsed for replicas of the wifes great grandfathers medals, which I am going to get mounted and framed for my boy. I think I will incorporate this image into it also.

You could mount it with the pic in the background, or have it centred and the medals surrounding it, either way sounds good, and don't forget to post a pic of the final product
