Big Cranes

Here are some images taken from beneath West Gate Bridge early last Sunday morning at low tide of the Zhen Hua 19 bringing two new container cranes to Swanston Dock.

This image shows the ship coming around the first bend in the river, although ''messy'' it illustrates the size of the vessel and cargo
Image
As it turned out there was plenty of clearance
Image

Taken with 10mm lens, note low freeboard, the ship lowers herself in the water to clear overhead structures and facilitate loading and unloading

Great series and great photos. You had some pretty nice, even light there!

Thank you all for your comments, i spend a great deal of my time around the Port of Melbourne taking pics of everything ! and have done so since i was quite young, i really didn't know if anyone would like these shots but the positive feedback has encouraged me to keep posting this type of image

I have been putting together a collection of pics on the changes around the old docks i.e. from wharves to high rises and hope to publish them one day

Here I was thinking I would find birds on this post

I still really enjoyed the set, thanks for sharing,

So how do they get them off the boat - with even bigger cranes :)

It looks like a very special purpose boat, a lowrider even.

Nice catch - did you know it was coming in, or was it just right spot at right time.

To remove them from the Ship they bring themselves to the same height as the dock (by altering the vessels draught by pumping water to its buoyency tanks like a submarine) and virtually roll them off on the cranes wheels which are fully articulated !
