Des' Alaska/Canada Trip #5 - Rockies Lakes (Dialup Warning)

One thing that the Canadian Rockies does really well is its lakes. What is amazing is that they are all this incredible blue/green colour. This is caused by the sediment suspended in the water from the melting glaciers that provide the water for the lakes.

I apologise in advance for the large number of images in this post, however I think it's good to see them in a group :)

Lake Minnewanka, near Banff. The largest lake in the Rockies, apparently, although it is madmade (dammed to form one big lake from 3 smaller lakes)

Image

Emerald Lake - The weather was ordinary, but still very nice.

Image

Moraine Lake - This was taken in the 5 seconds of sunlight we had all morning. The colour of the water really pops out at you when the sun hits it direcly.

Image

Lake Louise - Taken from the lookout at the top of the Lake Louise Gondola - the normal postcard shot with the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise in the foreground

Image

Peyto Lake - My personal favourite of the lakes that we saw, you can actually see the glacier that feeds it from the lookout.

Image

Maligne Lake - Spirit Island - This one was a bugger to get - as you can see I had to shoot straight into the sun, pretty much. Very pretty though, so I slapped a 6-stop ND filter onto the lens, took a 1s exposure and smashed it pretty hard in PP to get the result you see here.

Thanks for posting these, it brings back memories. I have hiked around a number of those lakes, having lived in Calgary for a number of years.

My favourite is the one of Emereld Lake. On a clear day, those lakes are stunning, sorry that you didn't get that.

The last one, I saw almost everyday. It used to be on the back of the $20 bill  so it is a classic shot.

Well done,

André

Moraine Lake looks incredible! Spirit Island is also really good under adverse conditions. Looks like a wonderful part of the world...

Andre, I think you're mistaken.. It is actually MORAINE LAKE that is on the back of the old CDN 20 dollar bill :)

Regardless, they are all beautiful. I would love to come back again in a few years, and not have to rush from one lake to another. In many cases, either we were in a rush or it was raining and I didn't want to hang around long....

Still a classic shot!

Don't drink Mexican beer while commenting on Canadian photos, that's my motto from now on
