Did I waste my time...

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Forum rules
Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Did I waste my time taking and processing this shot
I'm not sure about this photo and I'm trying to decide if this has any merit.
Your thoughts on weather I should have changed it to B&W (this is full color) or toned it in some way would be appreciated
as far as cropping goes I have a little leeway so should it be crop more on the right and have a little space returned to the left

Sorry, I am not a fan of this one, Keith. Nice and sharp but the image doesn't do much for me.

Cheers, Mick :) :) :)

Hi Keith, I love abstract so this appeals to me. I think it could do with some more room at the bottom, but that is just my personal opinion.

I like the contrasting shapes and the colour. I don't thing you wasted your time PPing it as you would never know how it would turn out if you didn't.

Keith

I'm not sure if this is a keeper or not like you I suspect. I would however rotate it 90 deg counter clockwise.

Keith, I quite like it, but I thought it lacked contrast as it was. I also prefer it rotated.

This was with some curves, USM for contrast + USM for detail, and slight blues saturation.

(Let me know if you want this removed)

I like the rework, but it now looks like it is upside down.

It does, the human mind just doesn't expect the light to come from the bottom left.

I also find the contrast enhancing treatment to be taking away, rather than adding to the image. The original was about shapes, tones and space (for me), the edit focuses the eye on all the nooks and crannies in the material.

I do like the original (wouldn't mind seeing a BW version, even toned). I can't quite put my finger on to why I like it, I guess it has to do with the relationship between the small bolts and rivets, and the bigger structures - if that makes sense to anyone...

Cheers
Steffen.

Hi Keith,

IMHO I think you did "waste your time" and your intuition was right...I am a big fan of these abstract type of images but feel that here the composition doesn't work..there are just too many elements working independently and I have nothing to focus on...and its something that PP cannot fix....as I said this is just my little 'ole opinion...
