Hi, as DOF is so shallow when shooting 'close up' where would focus point be best in similar shots ?

DOF C&C please
Deb, you will need to decide what is capturing your attention in the scene and make that the focus point. In this example, I would crop out the white heavily out of focus stuff on the left and make the coloured flower the interest point. The reproductive organs in the middle of the flower would look good nicely in foucus and the rest can be out of focus..

I reckon the red things / yellow balls on the end Deb. And they look pretty sharp already.
Try a bigger number for aperture though, so you get more in focus Russell

i like the DOF, i think its the wrong angle though.
imo you would have been better off shooting the flower straight on so the bud is more behind and in the background of the main subject of the photo. the placement of the bud in the center, draws your eye to it. i think your WB is a tad off aswell. colours look a little weird from my end. I think most of what has been said is appropriate.
You may however wish to do some "gardening". This is the term my friends use for manipulating the subject by cutting grass, foliage, flowers, and sticks around it away. This would leave you with just the flower you want and no distractions. Just to contradict myself though, I sometimes like the distractions. I think you have done quite well with the DOF by the look of this pic. Regards Colin
