shot this collection range for a friend designer
the title is the story for the shoot
derived from a quote by Catherine Deneuve, the designers main inspiration
classic tailoring with her own sci-fi asymetrical touch
after working out a whole heap of technical stuff I concentrate on concept art direction & pose
i consider my lighting design secondary to the above, its a complimentary element to add mood and definition. People always comment on my lighting as the defining factor to my work but it's not, art direction is.
I lit these with my sb800's with cellophane gels, red and green for that atmopheric sci-fi look
i don't condone smoking in fashion images but in this case it's part of the story

Really nice work as usual Wendell. You are right about the lighting, although you have it down to a fine art, your direction and design is what makes your images so good. The whole of the image is what is important, not just one element of it. You have combined all the elements and created art.
Well done Wendell.

Wendell - three points to cover:
#1 The shots are all great but,
#2 If someone is smoking there should be smoke - a wisp of said ethereal effect would enhance this pic
#3 This is a doozie - with due respect how come, all of a sudden, can you write the Queen’s English so bloody well

Maybe she does not smoke but surely a cigarette should show some action to fulfill the visual objective

Stylish work once again Wendell. How did you trigger the Sb800's Wendell and did you cut a mosaic on the filters before placing on the SB800's?
cheers

hi chris
i understand when i took the shot cigerette was almost out for a cigarette to keep on burning it needs the gentle touch of a womans lips
marco
i use the su8 remote trigger it's really unreliable to much direct line of sight issues but when it works its cheaper than 7 pocket wizards
got 3 sb800's in that scene
actually marco i dotn knwo what you mean by your question on mosaics if your referring to the green thing on image 2 its flare from a speck of water on lens its cool makes it more atmospheric
if your referring to dappled lighting they are coming off other elements between flash and subject in scene
flash shadows are coming off other elements between flash and subject in scene
thanks again

That's what I meant Wendell Thanks. I also purchased an SU800 to trigger my 2 SB800's and SB600. Got to learn how to use it. Still haven't unpacked it Good to know about it's limitations though. If you know of any other limitations apart from the guy using it let me know
cheers

su800 is good for indoors because the IR trigger bounces off walls to trigger flashes outdoors its almost useless i think its got a range of 2 metres and requires almost direct line of sight
soemtimes i compromise my lighting setup to cater for its limitations
for macro purposes when sub80 is close to flashes no prob there its not designed to match the versatility of a pocket wizard
but its cheap
also it has real issues with cr123 batteries it eats them for breakfast 1 shoot 1 $15 battery gone
Glen saved me ass on this one he sells rechargable cr123 batteries
thanks glen

Thanks Wendell. I was told by one of the guys up here that the SU800 was good up to 30 metres sounds as though he may have stretched its prowess a little
I'll need to contact Gle about the rechargeable. Is that Glen one of our moderators?
cheers

The last image is superb. Frankly, though, I don't like the lighting in the background for the first three. The model's pose, placement and looks are first class but the artificial looking colour lighting in the background, and in fact the choice of industrial context doesn't sit well with the extremely high class images of the model. This is only a personal view of course and in saying this I probably couldn't take pics at the moment with my gear of such good quality but this is my honest opinion of the images. As always fantastic images though from your studio work.
edit; I thought some more about this. In the first three I would get rid of the background (look at Perrault) I would give her a pool cue in the first, a shotgun in the second and get rid of the background completely in the third leaving her suspended on the ladder. The context is 'I am a gentleman at heart' as you noted. The fourth is perfect because of the stippled light forms between her legs
In the end we know Nothing, but in the meantime Learn like crazy. Your Camera Does Matter Nikon D70 D200 D300 PPOK
