Even though I'm a complete novice I'll still throw in my two cents.

#3 is my favorite, maybe because of the formation, I'm not entirely sure.

All over thought an excellent set.

The first of these is wonderful. Great trails showing where they've been, negative space for where they're going, exposure nailed (not easy with the strong backlighting).

Thanks Gary, and yes Greg, it was a magnificent day. No PP applied except for crop/compression for web use. The day was pristine. I filled almost 3gb of CF cards in about 90 minutes, the action was constant.

It would have been nice to have had a 400-500-600mm lens to borrow, but we're not all that privileged! There are times when I think I need a MkII or similar. The autofocussing of the 30D is very much hit and miss. Sometimes it nails it, other times it can't cope with the 5fps. I have seriously toyed with buying a used 1d Mkii (or n) for some time now, but they're still very expensive considering they're several years old.

I did manage to get an official photographer's pass for the day, which was, as the Yanks say, neat. However, I wasn't allowed air side. The CAA regulations are pretty tight these days.

Just out of curiosity Phillip, I think it's great. To be honest, I haven't had time to go through many of these photos yet, and there are a lot of cropping options to be explored. Your idea here looks excellent. I am going to do a few large prints for the Aero Club as a thankyou for the ticket, so we'll see how things go.

Hey Ozi, great shots.....I am going to the Amberley Air Show this weekend & was wondering what settings you used? I'll more than likely be using my 70-300 f4-5.6 IS, so any tips would be really appreciated ........I guess maybe turning of the IS would be a help?

Hi Snappd, here goes:
Try and position yourself with the sun at the side or back. Looking into the sun, in this instance, makes things difficult.
Wait for the planes to get out of shadow eg sometimes their position is such that the wings are in shadow. Wait until they turn.
Midday sun will be the most difficult to use, mid afternoon sun will give better light.
My 30D settings were as follows: 5fps, spot metering, "P" mode, ISO 100, jpg large.
Definitely turn IS off.
Your 300mm should be fine, but I haven't been to an airshow at Amberley. (I have been to Amberley Air Base). I imagine there will be squillions of people there. Coffs was great in that there were maybe 3000 people, and we were right next to the action. Your advantage will be more diversity of planes I imagine.
