I caught some dandy images today. Here's a small sample of what I've got, with more still to come. I love this little spot. The first one has a weird light in the sky because of the mixture of industrial light from the right and moonlight on the left. The 2nd is from a more dramatic angle, unfortunately I cut off the top, might have to clone it in or something, the third I forgot to take out of ISO 1600, so converted to bw, which worked out not too badly.

Amazing colour and composition - first one is my favourite, I love the clouds in it

Whats the length of exposure time on these?

Edit: Just looked at EXIF data - 536 seconds?

Dave - all three are great photos, especially one and two. In #2, with some selective burning and dodging, you could lift it to another level IMO. :)

Lovely stuff Dooda, your night photography is something else, I'd love to have a chance to do a night shoot with you and see you at work.. I guess my chances are a little slim.

#1 is my favourite, I love the lights and cloud almost looks like aurora borealis

#2 the Angle is great, and the star trails are a great addition

#3 Love the detail in the foreground stumps and then the smooth lake and gorgeous mountain range

Chris,

I'd love to hear what burning and dodging you'd do...
the wall on the left facing, make it darker? THat might be an idea as I think that the headlights were reflecting off of that particular area making it a little lighter than the rest, but none of the detail is blown out.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I was quite happy with all three.

Thanks for the comments all.

What bothers me the most about the second one (aside from the clipped top) is the length of the star trails. Eventhough this was an 8 minute exposure, they're too bright and short. I think I might have to go back with a fresh battery and a 20-30 minute exposure, which would dim them and make the streaks longer. Perhaps at F8 or so...

I've also thought about throwing in some kind of disposable light source so that light shines through the holes in the roof and doorways. Any ideas? It would have to be cheap because it's a throwaway (can't retrieve it) and non-flammable for obvious reasons.

Dave,

What beautiful images these are. They remind me of Cedar Key in Florida, or perhaps the backwater areas in Louisiana. Well done.

perhaps the things called cyalume light sticks. not sure what you guys call em, but basically little plastic tubes around 4 inchs or so long, full of liquid.
has a little glass vial inside which you snap resulting in up to 24hrs of chemical light. not hot. and available in different colours

Thanks for the ideas. Yes, I think that would probably be the ticket.
