Er, I mean Carrs Park, in Sydney's south.

I've been through the area countless times, but never taken a moment to actually visit this place, so when Lynn (Nikkofan) suggested this as a location for a day's shooting, I said "why not?".

And it's a beautiful location, in Port Hacking(I think) just a stone's throw from Tom Ugly's Bridge, with a small, calm beach, netted, beautiful grassed areas ... it actually reminds me of Bronte Beach in the sort of family oriented vibe it gives off. Highly recommended.

There's maybe 1 degree of lean in the image ... but I suspect that the tree on the right might make it look like there's more.

That bird was really very cooperative, just sitting there, I'd say move your head to the left, look up, and he did.

Good to see some photos from you Gary...

I'm interested why you chose to blow the sky in the cottage and bird photos... Were you using spot metering?

While the bird photos have good composition, there seems to be quite a lot of CA at the edge of the tree trunk - did this come from the PP treatment?

It was a very bright day and I chose to (spot) meter on the chest of the bird, who is heavily backlit. Consequently the sky is well and truly blown, but that doesn't bother me all that much, because this isn 't an image of the sky. Fancy that.

A part of the consequence of that decision though is what you are seeing at the edges of the sky and the tree, and as well as on the edges of the bird to a lesser degree.

I have a few where I used some fill to reduce the contrast range, but I've not yet had a look/play with those images. My suspicion is that the bird was a bit too far away for effective fill (onboard flash only) but I'll try to look at those before the end of the weekend.

There is very little PP on these, btw.

Alex, yes, me too, especially when I saw how this came out. The parallel lines of the bird/tree work very well here, I think.

William, bright sunlight is always a challenge.

I find that when I walk the dogs, I leave the camera at home. Picking up after them is awkward with a camera around your neck

They also tend to scare birds away

Unless I think that it will be a nice sunrise, then I still take the camera.

I love the second of the maggies as well, really has attitude.

Nice shots Gary - like the composition of the house, the detail of the maggie (i'm a fan of spot-metering as well) and the particularly natural pose in Lynn's portrait.

You should get out from behind that tilted server more often.

Just came across this post and I'm almost certain that this is the first post I've seen of Gary's that has any images (I am yet to see a single image from the venerable Birddog too). The portrait of Lynn and the second shot of the magpie are absolute rippers. As has been said numerous times already in this post, it'd be nice to see more photos from you Gary (and at least one from you Birdy... ).

For the record, it's spelt Carss Park and is on Kogarah Bay, not Port Hacking.

ABG, for the record Gary has posted quite a few times before and I have also seen a post of Birddy's with some shots of the Chinese Gardens and Darling Harbour. It is easy to see Birddy's images, just click on his name, then click on the line "all posts by Birddog 114", then just sort through till you find it
