First fashion shoot!

Hey guys..

Thought I might show a couple of shots from my first fashion shoot that took place a couple of weeks ago. I've been waiting for them to be published so I can post them here...





Please feel free to comment/critique. All feedback will be taken on board as I have another similar shoot lined up for next Thursday!

hard to critique if we don't know the brief

for example if the brief was to shoot fashion editorial for a funky brand
or is this just like a test shoot scenario

technically, it's full length lighting is evenly distributed which is good, setup on the 2nd is good and you presented the fashion well

but for your first fashion shoot i would say your well on your way

Liam - for catalogue work these photos work - they show the product and are nice and clean.

Sorry, I'll give you a little more info!

The job was for a shopping centre catalogue to showcase a whole bunch of the clothing brands offered in the centre. The brief was to make it look "fun"! Although these are two of the less "fun" looking shots!

Liam, nice images, maybe a few props would show more of the fun, say some thick rope for a tug-o-war, etc

Fair point! The art director wasn't keen on props but her boss wanted to use all of the studio lights to make it look like a movie set....unfortunately it was a last minute job and the designers didn't know how they were going to layout the catalogue so wanted the photo's as simple as poss!

Would have certainly added an extra element of interest, that's for sure!

Best to wrk to instructions. maybe a tug-o-war with a pair of jeans, makes them look even more desirable? Chuck an image in like that, they may make room for the image and let you direct next time

I like your thinking Glen. The shoot I'm doing next thursday is unfortunately going to be even more structured as the images will be used as life-size cutouts and must match front to back! That's gonna be a challenge!

so you had to conform to your art director
so technically you did well but i think to make these more fun they need more attitude some role palying and your there
you can furhter mix things up by shooting on location where the models can work with the environment like in a cafe or something.

Although it's a little bit different now, the end with the two hazy's is completely curved in all directions for smooth car shots and the photo board is now behind a partition and custom built wine set. This VR is a few years old.

Reason I ask is cos I setup some anti-hotlinking stuff on my site today but if anything you should be seeing a "You do not have permission to use this image..." picture (thanks for the heads up in an earlier thread Moz!).

I'm not seeing the two original images... I tried linking directly to the URL displayed in the image Properties as well without any luck...

When I click on the Quicktime link, I get "error on page" at the bottom left and nothing happens...

That is the most wicked studio! Nicely organised, I can also imagine your light just balls in that corner. I'd love to have a play in there  BTW, are those big soft boxes hotlights? Or you just flashed em all for that image?

I love the studio ; drool ...
In some way it looks like a giant light tent to me; with the
capabiliy of positioning lights inside.
Just lovely and the shots come out very nice.

Leek..I think it must have been my anti-hotlinking that did it - I turned it off not long before you posted that you could now see the images so I'll have to revise how it works. Thanks for pointing it out!

Cheers for the compliments everyone, I'll try to answer your questions!

Leek - no it's not my studio (I wish!!). I am a freelancer based at the studio (in Norwood for anyone from Adelaide!) and have an agreement with the owners/my mentors.

robster - It's not always quite so organised! Often we have 2 or 3 things going on at once so it's a lot messier! Plus there's now a semi-permanent wine set as well. The back corners are beautiful to shoot in - especially now that the cyc wraps in all directions (as mentioned earlier the QTVR is a bit old). The big softboxes are called 'hazylights'. They are strobes and rock the kazbah! Keeping them colour balanced can be difficult tho!

wendell - I've never seen pioneer so can't compare! Their site doesn't seem to work either! And no, I don't own any of it! The two guys that own the studio/building/business have been partners for over 30 years and in this studio for over 20 - they're pretty well established and very well known and respected in Adelaide (lucky me!!!).

christian - cheers! It is a fabulous place to play. It blew my mind when we landed the latest Mitsubishi 380 (series 2) and Colt jobs and I spent a couple of weeks assisting one of the owners (one of Aus' top car photog's) and we had the cars in the studio lit up like a dream. The cars were shot on a Mamiya 645 with a Phase One P25. LOTS OF FUN!!!
