Moon shots

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

thanks. :D i use 10-15% unsharp mask in NX. on the full moon i used 25% and i think i overdid it to be honest. i was gonna go back but i kinda liked the texture it gave. otherwise its about a 100% crop i suppose. thats pretty much it.

if you have any suggestions on what else i can do in PP for moon shots i'd appreciate it. :)

Fantastic images. I never realised you could get good moon shots with only 200mm. Looks like a 70-200mm is on my wish list.

its 340mm. 200 plus the 1.7x tele. :)

i was setting mine at 10-30s and got crap results compared to urs...
i love these pics :D
any hints u could share? :D

sure...

you have to shoot in manual mode.
f8-f13 depending on your lens
1/200-1/400 depending on moon phase
spot metering
sunlight WB
iso100
-0.3 or -0.7EV

i originally shot everything on a tripod but both of those shots are handheld becasue my tripod and macro lens are on loan. it doesn;t seen to make much difference at those shutter speeds when you have VR but as a rule it's easier to have it mounted.

i used to have the 70-300mmVR and was getting very good results from that aswell before i sold it so you should be able to pick up great shots with your lens aswell. i found that backing it off to 260mm or so got better results to avoid the lens' softness fully extended.

can you explain that a bit more. what do you mean by flatten the noise and how do i do that ? sorry, my PP skills aren't all that flash. :D
